Check Engine Light on 6.7

Check engine light came on today, did the key thing to pull up the codes it displayed a bunch of dashes across the odometer for a few second and then said DONE and the check engine light flashed about 8 times and stayed on steady after that. And just before the check engine light came on the overhead displayed oil change needed. Surely the check engine light doesn't come on if you just need an oil change does it? Checked all of the fluids and they seem ok. Does anyone have anyidea's?
thanks Brad

More than likely he has a 6.7 and it will not give you any codes doing the on/off on/off on key trick.

It will dash out after 5 sec. and say done then flash the CEL 8-10 times.

My truck is a 6.7 built in April 2007 and I had a flash done back in June. My CEL has been on about 15 times and the dealer said just drive it till they can look at it.

I have an appt. next week to get the latest flash / update.

Also I just had the oil changed right at 1000 miles ago and mine had the CEL on and the oil change required light came on.

The owners manual said oil intervals will vary based on driving conditions. I reset my oil change alarm and as always the CEL light went away and the truck still drives the same as the day I bought it.

Hope this helps....

I have a 6.7 and was never able to see codes doing the key on-off-on trick. Apparently I just wasn't doing it right because I was messing with it last night and did the key thing really fast and it did show a P061A code, then went to the ------- line.

Not sure what the P061A means by itself, but I think it gets set when you get a red ETC light on the dash. I get that occasionally when I'm setting the high idle function. 99% of the time it works fine, the other 1% you push the button, it doesn't idle up, and the red lightning bolt ETC light comes on. It alwats goes off again after 2-3 key on-off cycles.

Got the truck into the dealer had code P1451 and P245A, they reprogrammed the PCM and did an Exhaust system after treatment. They seemed to think that with the newer program I wouldn't have any more problems. I guess time will tell. thank to everyone that responded.

Thats where they initiate a regen using their test equipment to make sure the exhaust gets hot and burns out all of the built up particulates in the DPF

Ugh.. Just rolled 5k and my CEL come on. I was out hunting dove and on the 50 mile trip home it came on. I tried the key method and all it did was flash the CEL 10 times. May try it again in the morning. Hope it's just the egr or something simple. I guess it came on because I had to do alot of slow idle thru the fields. Either that or I knocked something loose underneath.

For whatever reason, my parking brake must be set before my key on / key off cycle test performs.
