Smile bulged intercooler

I am looking to buy a 2008, 3500 with 230,000kms on the 6.7 engine. The salesman said it has been gone through by the shop and the intercooler was replaced because it was bulged. My first thought was a programer was used and the boost got a bit high. What other causes could do this. I am not familiar with the 24valve engine but a 12 vavle fan, unfortunately mine was lost in a wreck. Any replies would be appreciated and thank you.

Wow, I've never heard of one being bulged before. A stock turbo isn't going to put out enough air to bulge that thing anyway. Create cracks or some separation, ok, I can accept that. Bulging though...

I'm not sure I'd trust a salesman when it comes to something technical.

Maybe it was plugged?

That's a good point. Some trucks came with a plastic intercooler, but I don't think 08s did.

Being it's an Alberta truck and may have or did have a PAS I wonder what the effect of a runaway engine suddenly having the outlet from the intercooler slammed shut with the engine beyond redline? Might be worth a look to see if there is or was a PAS installed. (positive air shut off valve, required on many oil and gas sites for entry with a diesel engine.)
