Batteries dead!

Did a search not much help....Went to work, truck was fine. Left work seemed to struggle starting (sounded like batteries dying) got on the road and the voltmeter wasn't in the red but at the far left of the black. As I drove, the gauge sank lower and lower. Got it home but now it is dead. I assume the alternator took a dump but this is my first diesel. Any ideas?
THanks

alternator or the voltage regulator. Hold on to your shorts, the alt is about 150.00 the voltagew regulator is over 500.00 because the built it into the ECM and you have to get a new computer!!!

Hopefully the truck still has some warranty

Thanks for the reply...It is a 5.9 I posted in the wrong spot! But the latter is what I am worried about. But I have warranty.
