Auto Trany possible problem?

Hi Everyone,

The last few nights and this morning I noticed the trany is not shifting to 5th and 6th gear like it has been. The last few nights I started it up like normal and headed home from work and hopped on the highway and my RPM's were over 2000 for about a mile until it finally shifted. I'm not gunning it or holding the Go Pedal down, I am just driving like normal. After it finally shifts and the RPMs go down to the normal and it is wormed up, everything works fine. It’s never done this before. Normally it has been shifting all the way to 6th gear even if it was not worm. Oh by the way, I only have 4100 miles on the truck if you need to know. At first I thought it was maybe the computer doing it's thing because its been in the 30's a few nights and mornings but then it did it last night and this morning and it was kind of worm out.

I already know the answer is to take in to the dealer; I just want to know if any one has any ideas on what it could be. One problem with this is it's going to be hard to take it in to them because once I get it to them it will not be doing it and it will be a wasted trip. They may have to hold it over night, but then I will not have a way to work.

Thanks for any advice or opinions in advance.

Check the owner's manual to be sure, but I know in the past, Dodge has prevented overdrive due to cold fluid. I know mine has to get over 45 degrees, IIRC, to shift into overdrive. Before a lot of people get excited, YES !, both 5th and 6th are overdrive ratios.

OPERATION
The transmission temperature sensor is used by the TCM to sense the temperature of the fluid in the sump. Since fluid temperature can affect transmission shift quality and convertor lock up, the TCM requires this information to determine which shift schedule to operate in.

Calculated Temperature
A failure in the temperature sensor or circuit will result in calculated temperature being substituted for actual temperature. Calculated temperature is a predicted fluid temperature which is calculated from a combination of inputs:

Battery (ambient) temperature
Engine coolant temperature
In-gear run time since start-up

Yeap, normal on most all vehicles with overdrive. They will not shift to OD or Lockup until the tranny temps are up to a safe range. Nissans been doing this for years.

I am having kind of a similar problem But my truck will not shift into second gear. I just had to replace the Torque converter and it worked fine for 300 miles now it doesnt want to shift into second gear or anything past that. The truck is a 99 2500 4x4 with the 47re.
