6spd. auto behind the new 6.7

A buddy of mine at work got the go ahead from his wife to buy a new dodge and he wants a cummins (it'll be his first). She said it has to be an automatic though. He asked me how the new automatics were holding up in the pickups and I didn't know what to tell him as I hang around in the 2nd gen. forums most of the time. So, for you guys that have them, how well do they perform, have there been any problems with them, and overall, are you happy with them? He really never tows anything, and hes not one of us power crazy guys so he wont really be stressing the tranny to much. Thanks.

110k miles on mine with no tranny issues towing at least 65% of those miles. Luv the new 6spd auto as most who own them do. On my 04.5 I had already replaced the gov. pressure switch before hitting 100k miles and at 220k miles the 48re had some busted snap rings in the pan and needed to be rebuilt.

that must be a dodge thing. I serviced the auto in a newer v6 dakota one time and found a piece of a snap ring in the pan. The thing still drove fine, and the customer wanted to just put the pan back up, fill it, and run it that way, so thats what we did.

I think, aside from the factory exhaust brake, the new 6-speed auto is about the only thing everyone can agree that is greatly improved in the new platform over the old 5.9L/48re platform. I have yet to hear a single complaint out of anyone regarding this transmission and there are a few, like GMScott, who are putting these trannies through their paces. I am a manual guy myself, but everything i read and see says the 68rfe is superb.

I just unhooked (45min ago) from a 24ft gooseneck with a 14,680lbs 4X4 man lift and it pulled great and got 11.3 ( hand cal) doing it. I have only had the truck for 3weeks and 3 days and have 3,200miles on it 60% towing. The exhaust brake works great and I can bring it almost to a stop with out hitting the breaks. I have now probs getting up to speed with 3.73 and the 6 spd auto in tow/haul. I have never really liked or trusted autos but I have seen way to many 07 5.9 6spd manuals need a clutch with less than 30K miles on them ( I have installed South bends for 2 of them and its not driver miss use or power adders). I could not be happier with my auto. It will also hang right with my Brother in laws 07 5.9 6spd manual with Edge Attitude when both trucks are empty. I have never had a prob with the 6.7 at all ( knock on wood). From what I have seen you need to work these trucks a little to keep them cleaned out, seems like a lot of the guys that have probs drive like a little old lady. I also turn the exhaust brake on every time I get in. I get a little over 15 on average.

At first, I was unsure whether to buy this truck. But after running it very hard for three months, it's the best (so far) tranny motor set up I've owned. And, at my advanced but youthfull age, I've owned a few rides.

That said, these diesels need to be seriously worked and not loafed around in town stop and go traffic, day in and day out. If I did light towing, I would buy a gas truck.

I agree with all that. If I was planning on light towing, I would buy a Power Wagon in a heart beat.

From whats I've heard it's the trucks who do a lot of town/city driving and long idle times who are having the most problems with late 2007 and early 2008 trucks. The 6.7 does not like to just be drove in town it needs to be worked more then the 5.9 do to the EGR and DPF.
