6 Speed or Auto
6 Speed or Auto
Thinking of buying a new truck in the spring and am torn between what tranny to get in it. I will be using the truck for occasional towing of my landscape trailer, 4 wheelers, and my boat twice a year. I would like some feedback from you 6.7 owners who have the manual and auto trannies to see what you are getting as far as fuel mileage. I plan on getting the 3.73's in a Quad Cab/Long Bed truck and leaving it all stock except for gauges, bigger tires, and some lights. Thanks in advance for your help.
if you are dead set on the 3.73s then you will for sure want the 6sp auto. The auto tranny is AWESOME!!!! the 3.73s with the 6sp manual is comparable to the 4.10s with the 6 spd auto. If you do decide on a manual you will want to get it with 3.42s, otherwise your fuel mileage will stink even worse then usual.
Also it sounds like this will be your daily driver as well so i would much rather have the convenience of a auto tranny vs a manual. The new auto's are very strong and holding up very very well. So far i have only read of 1 person that had a problem with one, and it was just a fluke.

have you guys ever driven the new 6pd auto? I see none of you have a 6.7 so im just curious. Up until this year and the new 6sp auto, if you were buying a dodge i would have told you to buy the manual everytime, but now its a different story. I knew i wanted a cummins, but it was the tranny that pushed me into the buyers circle.

i was really asking the other guys that were saying manual is the only way to go... Anyways, i was looking at the dodge site and it is kinda messed up, wont let you get 3.73s with the auto, but there are many ppl with 08s that have 3.73s and the auto so im sure there site is just messed up.
I would go with the Auto. I was going to get the manual until I drove both. The auto has a better overdrive ratio. At 80 mph I am just touching 2000 rpm. This last weekend I drove it 460 miles, mostly all hwy, set the cruise at about 75 and averaged a touch over 18 mpg.... rolling hills the entire way. The shifting is very smooth. Now I don't drive this as a daily driver, but I am very impressed with this truck. As for towing... it's very strong. I pull a 25 ft. camp trailer w/ and ATV in the bed.... no problem pulling the passes here in Montana.
I checked my order with the dealer - he said 3.73's are standard and that's what I have ordered. Whew........I did not want 4:10's for this beast as the most I will be towing is 10,000 lbs.
Anyway.......I test drove a reg cab 3500 no bed with 4:10's and the auto was great but the truck rode like crap - hope my new 2500 ain't that bad.

I had a 04 2500 5.9 with the auto towing a 28ft toy hauler @ 11,000+ lbs and it did a good job. I currently have a 07 3500 with 6 speed manual towing a 38ft 5th wheel @ 15,500 and it also does a great job. Seems like mileage is around 8 to 10 with the trailer and around 19 without. I don't mind the manual tranny.
