I would recommend not buying anything new then since it is always different.

From what I'm reading, you guys aren't doing all that bad. I have NEVER gotten the mileage that some of you claim -- high teens in town and low 20's on the highway. NEVER. I've tried driving really sedately, I've tried driving agressively, I've tried in between. It doesn't happen.

My 01 6sp which I bought new got crap mileage until 27k miles. That's when it sort of "woke up" and I finally was getting 13-14 around town and 17-18 on the highway. My US Gear Overdrive made NO difference in mileage (I had 4.10 gears).

My 03 auto got slightly better mileage than the 01, but it too took about 25-30k miles before it did.

My 05 6sp, which I bought used with 48k miles has always gotten 12-14 around town and has gotten up to 19 on the highway. BUT, you have to keep it UNDER 65 for that to happen. Set the cruise at 70 and it'll get about 16-17 mpg... above that and it drops like a rock.

Now, these are all duallies and all 4x4 so that probably has something to do with it...

Still, I think the 6.7's are doing just fine.

Any of the trucks I have used with 4:10s and 4x4 get 18-18.5 (that's also at 65mph) at best so I have a hard time believing anyone that says otherwise. So like I said IMO, if GMscott is getting about 17MPG at 75mph I bet I could get 18MPG at 65mph just like all the rest I've tried. That and Dodge said the trucks would get the same MPG as the 2007 5.9 so in my book they were right. Even on the TDR and here most are saying they get 18-19 on the highway and 13-14 in the city basically the same I get in my 2006. BTW I don't like all the junk to keep the air "cleaner" either but no one will tell the government to shut up (a looong topic not for here).

LOL

ill buy that

i'll agree 4.10s or even an 07 your analysis is spot on

your right on the gearing with 3.73's with 35's, and my 03 irks everyone who drives it lol. 1800 rpm baby

the long conversation on emissions OMG dont open that can of worms in this thread itd be 300 pages long

Dang!!!!!! You guys are scaring me with your mileage talk. I am perfectly happy with my '04 5.9L Dodge but would like to get a new '08. Only have 49,000 on present truck but I just like to trade every 3-5 years. Is the mileage comparison really that bad? I put a K & N air filter on my current truck and it seemed to help mileage while towing my 3-ton travel trailer.

FYI
Replace the K&n with something else. the K&N does not filter enough, i speak from the experience of loosing turbos and a motor to the dust that the K&N let into my first dodge

I currently use the Amsoil drop-in filter... haven't decided on an aftermarket system yet.

As for trading up, I will eventually have a 6.7, but I'm waiting until the fourth-gen trucks are out, probably at least 2010 if not 11 or even 12. I'm seriously thinking of a 4500 or 5500 for my next truck, and it will likely be that long before the cab & chassis models are migrated to the newer platform.

My modestly modified 5.9 with smarty, RV's, boost mod, and exhaust got awesome fuel economy. I was always consistently in the high teens in city and in the very low twenties on the HW. It was not until 20,000 miles before I started seeing advertised MPG on a regular basis.

I'm hoping as we get out of the blended fuel season I'll start seeing 15MPG. ...at least until I can shake off some of the bluetech.

Which for most would be reasonable. 4"+ lift kits, 35"+ rubber , accessory laden trucks need not apply, though for obvious reasons. The old venerable 12 valve attained great MPG numbers , but horsepower was nothing like todays stock truck, and the driveability wasn't close either. If we keep pushing , someone will find the secret to decent mileage with a functioning emmissions system. just requires a bit more time. Until then Illegal (In the US) ECS mods are one way to get there. Come on Smarty 6.7!!!
+1 The black beast only comes out of the garage for towing the toys or a date. Otherwise 62mpg's in the TDI!

I just got my first diesel and I agree with what was said before about getting the same if not worse mileage in my '97 1500 2wd with a 5.2 in it. I think after driving it for 6 years my avg mpg city was 9-10 and highway got 13-15. The truck was well kept and maintained regularly and I traded it in with 150k on it with no problems with it whatsoever. I moved up to the diesel b/c I liked the idea of having more power with better mpg, granted that was coming from what I had before. I can see where everyone is coming from with the non-dpf equipped trucks, but from what I have read by 2010 it's only going to get more strict. So until they actually figure out that we are burning more fuel to "save" the environment, everyone is going to suffer if they want to get into a new vehicle.

Who ever actually puts a hybrid sticker on their truck post a pic up....I think everyone could use a good laugh...

fuel economy

I have 15000 miles on a 6.7 quad cab 2500 4x4 stock. So far absolutely NO repairs which is good. Only oil changes every 3000 miles. MPG city about 13 to 13.5, highway 18 to 20 depending on conditions. Running empty from northern colorado to Flagstaff, AZ and back I averaged 19.3 mpg on the trip with a reasonable headwind for part of it. I tend to average about 18.5 to 19mpg on shorter highway runs. All of this is at 75. If I run about 65 it is optimal and the mpg easily stays in the 19s. With an outfitter caribou camper at 55 I can average about 16mpg. Which is pretty good considering I drive over substantial passes in Colorado. So far it has been a good truck.

Ditto. I've had the same mpg and reliability results as Hikecol.

I forgot to mention that my 01.5 had 3.73 gears too... Not sure that it makes up for 5-6 MPG though.

I'm trying ot get a handle on what this might cost me in real $$'s going from my current 5.9 to a 6.7. I've got records on every gallon of fuel I've burned... so I know that my best unloaded economy is 16/20 local/hiway. Towing the worst I've ever seen was 10.9 and the best 14 with 12.x being typical.

In the last 4 years I've averaged 17,000 miles/year with 5,000 of that towing. We are hoping to tow even more in the next few years...

I just cranked in the numbers for a new truck at 9 mpg towing and 13/18. It's an extra grand+ a year in fuel IF fuel stays at 4.25/gallon and IF those are good numbers. hmmmm...

What numbers would you use here?

Thumbs up

I just purchased my 08 dodge 2500 diesel, big horn package 3.73 a week ago today. I have alittle over 400 miles on her. Traveled 42 miles on freeway at 65 mph, and when i pulled into my driveway, the readout was at 21.1. Can't complain about that.
