272 Transfer case
I hope everyone is having a great memorial day weekend. Myself I am trying to find a growling noise. I have a 2008 shortbed 4x4 with about 380,000 miles on it. I have a vibration and growling noise. I took out the front drive shaft and had the rear drive shaft rebuilt with a new tube and u-joints. I replaced the seal in the transfer case when I put in the new rear driveshaft. I have not put in the front shaft and still have a small vibration. The rear seal on the transfer case is leaking like a mother. I put about 3000 miles on it and I am covered in oil under the truck. I have a lot of play in the yoke of the drive shaft. I am thinking the bearings are out in the transfer case. I think I am going to pull the transfer case tomorrow and break it apart. I guess my question is where do I find replacement bearings or any other parts that may be necessary other than the dealer? I am in a small town in East Texas with minimal repair shops around here. I will have to go to Houston or Dallas. Has anyone rebuilt the transfer case? Does it have a bushing in the tail shaft? Can it be replaced? The vibration has been there a while and I am thinking it has cause the bearings to go out or beat the bushing out of the tail shaft. I have read that it could be a bent axel shaft or bearings in the rear end. How do I check the bearings in the rear end for wear? What is the specs for the axel? I have a dial indicator so I figured I could pull the axels and put them on some blocks and rotate them with the dial indicator. It is due for an oil change so now is a good time to check the bearings and axels. Thanks for any input or suggestions.

Could be the rear bushing, usually the bushing will spin in the housing. It usually will take out the new seal in short time, the housing will need to be replaced if that happens.
