2009 Front Shock Help
O.K. This is my son's pick up that he purchased used a couple of months ago .
What it has on the front is Rubicon air " Shocks " ?? Now , I don't know if these are actual " Shocks " or some sort of ride / boost assist . What has happened is the upper shock mount tower above the spring has additional metal / bracing that protrudes out towards the wheel , thus it serves as the top mounting point for whatever these are . That bracing / mounting apparently broke before at the top of the tower , thus allowing the " Shock " to force up the side of the tower . It appeared to be welded by a idiot as it was only a surface weld . It broke again and actually snapped out the entire side of the tower were it bolts to the top of the spring .
Now , I am fixing it , already have it welded back together but am going to reenforce it with additional steel .
Now here is my question , Are These actual " Shocks " or are they a boost type ride assist ? There are no other shocks on the front like you would see were it comes up through the spring and bolts to the top of the tower , thus I am wondering if this is why it broke in the first place ??
We have tried searching " Rubicon " but it just takes us too jeep sites , So was hoping someone here could enlighten me .
Thanks to All .

Well , as an update , What I am looking at is stock top shock towers that had aftermarket upright and arms added to it to add this shock / booster or whatever it is . I can tell by the stock tower that it is divided into thirds , but then in between one of the thirds they added an upright which the arms were attached to . Their poor welding at the top of the tower resulted in that weld breaking and ultimate failure of ring at bottom of tower .
Something else that caught my attention was that the new uprights and even the arms are 2 different styles , As one set has odd shape rectangular holes while the other side has all round holes ????????
All I know is that after I get done welding it back together and the additional metal bracing , it may break some were else but it is not breaking here again .
Still don't know if these things are shocks or booster's of some sort . It has the long cylinder like a shock then an attached smaller cylinder with the air fitting on it , If anybody can help with that answer , I sure would appreciate it .
I have lurked here a long time but never felt I had anything to contribute but sure learned a lot about my dodge and for that I am very Grateful .
Sincerely ,
Fred H.
