2007.5 Possible Variable Vein Trouble

2007.5 Possible Variable Vein Trouble

I've done some reading and searching, but have not found any one person in my efforts that has experienced what I am experiencing. That's not to say that there isn't anyone who has not.

Culprit:
2007.5 Ram 2500 6.7 auto w/ ~42,000 miles. EGR is deleted, cats/DPF deleted w/ 4" Flo-Pro, H&S mini max for codes. (I rarely ever turn the tune up)

Problem:

(I am not currently experiencing any codes per my Solus and H&S)

With KOEO, I hear what sounds like a stepper motor fidgeting back and forth. The noise when I noticed it was easily pinpointed to the turbo somewhat attributed to the 4" by 10' stainless steel microphone attached to it. The motor never seats or stops, continuing on for as long as I'd let it, I'm sure.

With KOER, the noise continues and audibly changes the exhaust note.

While driving, the noise continues still and the truck seems to be having trouble building any boost. With the exhaust brake on, and decelerating, the exhaust brake acts uncertain and intermittent cutting on and off rapidly.


I can only assume carbon buildup on the Variable Vein Actuator (VGT?) is causing this.

Questions:
1. What caused the buildup? I assumed at the time of the deletes, that this would mitigate these issues.

2. Is this more an electrical issue than mechanical since I'm experiencing actuator problems KOEO?

3. What do I do about it?

Thanks in advance for help and or experience with this issue. Please don't respond with two words like "replace turbo" unless you can further add substantial info to back up your claim.

You are correct excessive soot buildup on sliding nozzle most likely caused by excessive idling or short haul driving under light loads or over fueling. I'm surprised no codes have set such as the P2262. If your turbo has been replaced already there will be a cleaning port. You can have the turbo cleaned and actuator replaced but will need to be done by dealer or shop that has proper tools to calibrate new actuator. Read the repair procedure and you will understand why.

Very common issue is soot building up on the turbo vanes and causing problems..turbo needs to be cleaned and you need to leave the exhaust brake on all the time so the vanes will continue to move, keeping the soot from building up on them in the future.

Thanks for your responses.

The exhaust brake has been run probably 90% of the truck's life. H&S defaults the brake to the on position.

Is this an issue that I will continue to deal with given the predisposition of the veins to become sooted? Is there any updates / recalls that I'm missing to minimize this issue?
