2007.5 Clutch slipping
2007.5 Clutch slipping
Hello everyone,
On our way home today from camping, towing our 27ft trailer (about 5000lbs) I noticed my clutch was slipping in the higher gears when pulling hard and accellerating. It's the original clutch and I don't know how the truck was driven before I bought it at 55K Km... It is now at 137K and I drive a mix of stop and go city traffic and highway traffic... I don't generally tow much more than my camper trailer, yet have from time to time towed trailers up to 14000lbs but have no idea what the previous owner towed, there are holes from a 5th wheel hitch in the deck but it was removed when I bought the truck. Is there an adjustment on the clutch or am I in the market for a new clutch? Is it normal for a clutch to wear out this early? I crawled under the truck and I can't see an inspection cover in the bell housing or am I missing something? How big a job is it to change the clutch on these trucks? I've changed a few on other vehicles from small cars to dump trucks and I work on helicopters for a living so the actual labour isn't an issue, just the time to do it and equipment required... Thanks for any suggestions.

Take that clutch, have it gold plated and hang it on the wall as a memorial that it lived past 100k
Mine, deleted of course, didnt make it past 20k
Install is similar in difficulty to a NV5600 clutch install.
If you swap out to a single mass flywheel (highly recommended) it will be a bit noisier, as the aluminum housed G56 loves to soak up engine noise and pass it along to you as grunts and growls. Gorrila Juice will eliminate most of that.
I would recommend a good single disc South Bend with a hydraulic upgrade.

So apparently just the pressure plate was worn out... Got a new one being installed right now... Can't afford any upgrades at the moment but next time I'll upgrade for sure! Thanks for the help Blake.

I'm also due for a clutch soon. I'm getting noise from that area when the clutch pedal is depressed (pretty much goes away when clutch is engaged). I think it's the dual mass flywheel and/or throwout bearing going south. It would be nice if I could just have the DMF replaced if the clutch itself is OK.
What brand flywheel are you using? I was told LUK brand is what's installed in these trucks from the factory. I believe it's available through NAPA Auto Parts.
