1st time post: same **** problem
Funny ratlratl!! Life IS more fun when you are "Breakin The Law! Breakin The Law!!"
There is nothing wrong with wanting to stay legal. For me, staying legal would have meant constant issues and probably several trips to the dealer and then maybe even lemon law. I just like my truck too much and I found a way around that.

Cali doesn't have a smog on diesels yet does it????
If it does then just put the stuff back on smog it and pull it right back off!!
It only took me 2 hours by myself and that was the first time, I know I could shave 30 minutes off that easy now that I know how it goes
IN the mean time, just unplug the EGR and see how it does

CA does spot checks on commercial vehicles for tampering with smog equipment at weigh stations and random check points. minimum fine is $300 according to their commercial drivers manual.
i have a 5500 so that includes me. up until this past march before i sold my 03 & 05 1 ton dullies it wasn't a problem because they had the stock pickup beds i didn't have to do check points. If they had flat beds it would have been a different story.
i am taking mine in tomorrow for service, it does 90% city driving in bay area traffic. my dodge dealer in San Jose's diesel mechanics last week went to train for a new "fix". they are told to wrap the exhaust, insulate and install an updated flash. it is a 5 day process.
i have had no problems with mine except for mileage. my service rep is going to attempt to do the upgrades even without the problem codes. all updates have to be approved by chrysler before they can perform them. under cerebus getting proper service is difficult, the old chrysler was a different animal.

normally on non commercial vehicles we receive a notice to have our gas vehicles smogged. i have not heard anything about regular non commercial diesel pickup getting inspected for diesel. Of course that doesn't mean that the local authorities couldn't inspect the vehicle for tampering with the smop equipment.
sometimes a regular cop will check a gas vehicle for smop tampering.
anytime you break the law you play the odds. i'd rather stay legal. i can't see taking the risk.

As far a Calif goes, no we don't have inspections yet, but in 2010 it will be nation wide for the diesels. That's another topic. But most of my friends who are cops say they don't bother to stop one of the pickups unless it is belching black smoke. THey know it shouldn't be smoking at all so that is a good sign that it has been tampered with. Otherwise, they are too busy to care much.
Just a fix it ticket though, for now.
rfeiller; P.S. WHy 5 days to wrap the exhaust and reflash??? Seems a bit excessive to me.
Steven K; I don't LIKE breaking the law, but the law makes no sense when you use 30% more fuel to keep some particulate out of the air. How are we saving the planet that way. I live out here with all the tree huggers and they have no idea what they are asking for. So the EPA keeps mandating all this clean diesel and they know that the SUVs ang pickups don't have to meet any fuel milage requirements so they don't care.
Ok,,,,, Off the soapbox now.
HeyTXPIG: How did you know I was a boyscout??? It's been about 25years
Diesel Lady: I am kinda upset their not just changing the turbo, the svc mgr says that they drill the hole & plug, just like you said...... I guess the new style he says has a clean -out port... I'll just be bringin it back to them when the friggin CEL comes back again

Ya, well my big concern is who the heck is drilling the hole? And where does all the shrapnel go if they aren't careful to clean it out. Kind of like drilling the exhaust manifold for an EGT probe. Gotta go in with a magnet and make sure you don't leave crap in there. Well good luck. I think I would try just taking it apart and cleaning it first before I let them drill holes in it.
Sucks doesn't it.
