Is an 08 worth buying?

I keep hearing about how the 08's will be selling cheap as the year comes to a close due to a surplus of trucks. Is an 08 really worth buying or does it still have too many problems? I was thinking of picking one up if the price is right, but am still unsure about the whole 6.7 and 68rfe (if I decide to go with an auto). What do you guys think? Is there anything to watch out for in particular on these "modern marvels"?

Some are having problems with the engines and turbos getting plugged up w/ soot and regen is allowing fuel to contaminate the engine oil. Most did a DPF/EGR delete and it solved the problem.

Chris,

What are you gonna do with your truck? Keep it or sell it?
If you are selling it you probably already know they are not going for much either.

I plan on keeping my 06. I have done too much to it to trade it in. The kbb trade in value on it was olny $12,600. It's worth a lot more than that to me. It is a little beat up from the oilfield, but I like that truck.

I love my truck and don't hear much complaining about 08's. I wouldn't go back to a 5.9.

08's are a great deal right now! They need to move them, and there aren't any major changes for 09, so you might as well!

I have had my 08 since January and not a lick of trouble. Would not give this truck up for anything. Would like for it to get the fuel milage my 01 got but not enough to trade back These trucks were built to be worked so if you are looking for a grocery getter i'd pass, otherwise go for it.

08' is the best of the 6.7's IMO. Send me a pm. Got some info you might want to know about.

Just did it myself, 2005 to 2008 trade up

I just went through the same thought process myself. I went to the dealer "just to gather facts" and came home with a '08.

If fuel prices stay the same or go down, I guess I'm a lucky for timing the market right with the discounts you can get right now. If the fuel price goes back up (and I suppose it will) I'm probably an idiot for spending my money on another big truck.

I've only had the '08 about 3 weeks and 600 miles and my '05 is not yet a forgotten memory. My initial impressions favor the '08 over the '05. Never thought I'd say I wanted a "smoother" diesel, but that's how the 6.7 seems vs. the 5.9 in my '05. Some of it might be the new auto tranny as well, but whatever the reason, the '08 is just smoother and quieter and while I didn't think I wanted that, I am finding that I like it. The '08 just feels more powerful. I've got a 28 foot toy hauler that will be behind it most of the time, but haven't had a chance to tow it yet. The exhaust brake is one of those things that you don't know you're missing until you've had one. I'm anxious to see if I think the same after towing with it.

I almost didn't go with the '08 because of the reports of poor fuel economy, particulate filter issues, etc. 600 miles isn't much of a test, but I'm thinking I had one of the poorer '05's and got one of the better '08's as the fuel economy isn't looking that bad so far. Fuel economy isn't the first priority with a truck this size, but its sure nice when it works out a bit better than you expect. I do very little city driving, I don't have a clue how many miles before the "regen" typically happens, but I've not seen it yet.

Anyway, I'm happy with my trade up from an '05 to an '08 so far. I wouldn't have paid the normal price to do it, but with the current discounts it sure makes the the deal a lot more attractive.

I've gotten some CELs but they have all gone away by themselves. My current truck is just a pleasure to drive from the power of the 6.7 to the factory e-brake, to the awesome 68re trans. Maybe it's because I finally got a truck with every stinking option Dodge makes but this is definitely my favorite truck so far. Mileage could be better but I knew about the mileage before i bought it. I am seriously considering doing some deleting myself just so my mileage will hopefully go up and also so I can quit worrying about clogging up the turbo. I may do as lots of others have and just let the turbo clog up in the hopes of getting a brand new turbo and then getting the deletes done. Anyways, if you drive the new 6.7l/68re truck you will have a hard time not buying it.....

I've had my 08 for 7 months and 7300 miles and love it. I had my first CEL but it reset itself. Mileage is not that bad 15 city and 19 highway ( a few weeks ago driving like grandpa I got 21 driving 62). Now I still have the EGR and DPF for now.
