Question Yet Another EGT Question

Sorry for all these questions - this one is about maximum allowable sustained EGT.

The owner's manual with the X-Monitor says, "Caution: Do not run the engine at higher than 900 deg. (1050 deg. pre-turbo) temperatures ("PYRO") as indicated on the display for extended periods or engine damage may result."

This statement raised two questions for me:

Does 900 deg post-turbo equate to 1050 deg. pre-turbo? Generally I've seen a difference of 250 to 300 deg. mentioned. And,

Based on the experience of other 3rd Gen. owners, is 1050 deg. max. reasonable or is the oft mentioned 1200 deg. a safe maximum?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Dave

I dont worry about mine at all until it gets over 1350*. It only does that for short periods, 8-15 seconds or so at a time . Most of the guys experienced with the Cummins have generally said that 1300* wont really hurt the 600s and 610s. I have had mine to 1500* for about a second and then panic set in.

BTW pyro is pre-turbo.

I would say 900 is a very conservative number. My truck will hit 900 with little effort or load.

I think they put a low temp limit for law suit reasons. 900 is a very conservative limit and your eng will never burn out the pistons, so there will never be a law suit over an eng failure with burnt up pistons. and if you do, then you exceeded their recomendations on your own and they are off the hook.

At least your pyro works! I bought and installed an X-Monitor and the pyro never worked sent it back after rechecking every thing and they were more than helpful. Only problem now is that its been gone for almost three weeks and still no news I have to call today and see if the wonderful US Postal service lost yet another package or if they are just keeping it from me.
