Wrong oil - Does it matter?
Wrong oil - Does it matter?
Well I drove to the 'big city' the other day & bought Redline products to replace all the fluids..
A couple problems though...I did not notice until AFTER I'd changed the transfer case that they did NOT give me what I'd asked for - Redline C+...Instead they gave me D4.. I did NOT put this in the transmission, but it did end up in the transfer case before it clicked in that the lable on the bottle WASN'T what I wanted..Is this a problem?
I would assume that it would be a big NO to put the D4 into the 48RE right?
Also, once again did not notice until AFTER I had already drained the engine oil - They gave me three quarts of 15W50 - The rest were the proper 15W40. Since the old oil was already out, I had to use what I had on hand...Those three quarts shouldn't be a problem right?
Thanks,
ZS

Yeah, the wrong oil could matter a great deal; but with RL you're on solid ground.
Sounds like you had quite the experience in the 'big city', huh? Bigger than Guelph or K-W?
I wouldn't put the D4 into the tranny, but don't think it'd be a big deal in the xfer case. On second thought, I don't think D4 will hurt the tranny either. The manual only says that Dexron II is NOT recommended because it may cause clutch chatter.
I wouldn't worry about the 15W-50 in the engine (catalog says its ok for diesel); I'd run it til the next change.
I'd pay better attention next time though, its not like RL is a buck a quart. I'd also think twice about going back to the place that snookered you. What'd they say when you called them on it?
You are in the beginning of the warranty period too. If some anomaly (problem) does crop up and you're caught with the wrong kind of oil in it - yeah it could matter - to your checkbook rather than DC's.

Well I picked up the oil in Mississagua on the way to a business meeting...so I really didn't take the time to check just WHAT they gave me - I gave them a list WITH their part #'s on it - and had gotten confirmation from them a head of time that they had it all in stock - again by THEIR own part #'s (from their web site).
I figured the D4 in the transfer case shouldn't be a big problem. A bit nervous (warentee wise) about putting it in the transmission tho! I e-mailed Redline a few mins ago & asked for THIER opinion...If worst comes to worst, I'll be taking back the unopened D4 & exchange for C+.
I should have been paying closer attenton in the first place , but this was the first actual work I had done on my truck myself so I was paying a lot more attention to the truck & not enough to the lables on the bottles - Won't make THAT mistake again!

Give RL a call tomorrow when at work; and I think its Dave in technical support that you should ask for, its sometimes worth its weight in gold when you can talk to a live human.
And you could tell him that MTL is much better in my Mustang's World class T-5 than either D4, or C+, or even Mobil1 ATF (I've tried them all). The only stuff that approaches MTL's shifting quality at high speeds in that tranny is $1.09 dino ATF!

Oh man would you believe it was my mistake!
I went to e-mail the company I bought the stuff from..They have LONG part numbers & I thought I should verify what I was saying to them...Well I discovered I made a typo in my original request to them, which is what I printed out & took to the store when I bought the oil..I typed one digit as '5' instead of '6' - well that '5' corresponded to D4..'6' is C+!
I was hoping I could blame someone else for this!

Response from Redline:
The D4ATF would be suitable for the transfer case. In the automatic
transmission I would recommend the C+ATF as there are slight
frictional characteristic differences between the C+ATF and the D4ATF.
The various viscosities will mix without any problem, the 15W50 will
mix with the 15W40 and just increase the viscosity about 25% but
shouldn't be any problem.
