Will not start and no codes

I tried to start my truck this morning to go to work and all it would do it crank. It sounds like it wants to run but wont. I took my wifes car to work so I don't have access to the truck right now so I was just hoping for some ideas on where to start when I get back home.
I checked for codes and there were none.
I can hear the fuel pump going once I bump the starter.
I am pretty sure I was smelling fuel outside of the truck but couldn't find a leak anywhere.
My next step was going to be opening the fuel filter drain and bump the starter to see if any fuel comes out and maybe change the fuel filter, disconnect the batteries for a few minutes to reset the ECM and return the Smarty to stock.
Any other ideas out there? I guess worse case scenario I can have it towed to the dealership since I think I am still within the extended powertrain warranty the 2005s had

I'd return the Smarty to stock first. Then try to restart. If no start, then disconnect the batteries. I would def check for fuel flow out of the canister, low fuel volume could still be a contributor, so seeing fuel flow may or may not take the lift pump out of the equasion. Clean the canister really good before you install a new filter, then try a start.

You might have your answer when the canister is open and low or no fuel or you will be still in search of your problem. But doing the first steps will tell you if the problem is deeper.

BTW on edit - I have had several friends with 4.5's an 5's recently have their lift pumps go, you could be in the same situation, all had 60-70K miles on them. Needless to say, all of them went aftermarket with AD-150's, a couple also replace their lift pumps but still did the AD's, that way they have a back-up lift pump.

The lift pump was working good so I decided to change the filter. Once I changed the filter and primed the canister it fired right up. There was a large puff of white smoke once it fired but it went away after a few seconds. The filter only had 5000 miles on it and was a Baldwin 7977. This was the first time for me running this filter. Do they normally clog up faster because of the smaller micron rating or do you think I just got some bad fuel and the filter did its job?

Had mine do this last year with same symptoms. Changed the filter and she started right up with a cloud of smoke. The only thing I could think of was that I got bad fuel from somewhere. I ran some Power Service through and changed the filter again after a full tank. Never had another problem since then.
