When at a stop put it in N, when you are in drive its slipping the TC and the fluid warms up. N will pump the fluid through cooling it off. I have a 03 and the od lock out, so I installed my switch and when I am doing 30-40 I leave it in 3rd and lock it up, no more heat works great. I was in the mountains in Pa awhile back and used 3rd on at 40 mph with it locked up. I got about 18mpg, if I used od it dropped like a rock. Hand calculated of course.
Also on mine 03 HO with the 48re it will lock up in first and stall the motor
2nd lock up up at 25 by the factory. Remeber that if you are towing up a hill in a 30mph area like the mountains. You put it in 2nd and it will lock up at 25mph. This will keep the temps from sky rocketing.
