when do you change your oil?
Viking, You can do a search and get all kinds of oil threads and oil wars on here...ha ha.
I change mine every 5k. It's a nice round number, well within specs and not to burdensome at that interval...imo. Shell Rotella T 15w40 and a new fleetguard stratapore filter.
Don't go to the dealership and waste your money. You can buy 3 gallons of Rotella at Walmart or Autozone for about $24.00. Fleetguard Stratapore for about $10.00 from Cummins, any large diesel shop, or online/phone order from Geno's Garage.
Get you a 5 gallon bucket, change it yourself....and go drain it at Autozone in their recycle bin.

heres one for you, I went to 2 dealers and asked for the auto trans 30K service oil change, filter and and adjustment the bands. They both said that that is not needed. I wrote Dodge and they say do what your dealer wants, so I guess the book we go by is no good.
I just did my first oil change w/ 7402 on the odometer. I'll stick w/ the 7500 mile oil changes. Should average about 2 times a year for me which will be nice. I used Chevron Delo 400. Bought a 6 gallon case at Sams Club for $48.

After oil analysis (Blackstone Labs) I will be changing every 15,000-16,000 mi. I do some towing and this is what was reccomended. Why everyone thinks they know what there engines needs better than the Cummins engineers I have no idea. This same engine in a Freightliner is only supposed to be changed every 20,00+ mi.(Ifigure this probably is genuine severe service) If you are changing on a 70's gasser schedule it's your money. I don't want to give Iran, the big oil co.s or anybody else my money unless I need to. You will get loads of opinions but I go with what the guys that built the engine reccomend backed up by oil analysis.

I'm still in disbelief that some folks change their oil so frequently. The best way to describe it is blind faith. It's no secret that Cummins and all the other manufacturers have tested various oils and extended change intervals for decades so why anyone would want to throw scientific facts to the curb and spend more money is beyond me.
So your oil is black instead of brown, who cares as long as the lubricating properties are up to spec?
I change mine every 5k because I don't put a lot of miles on. I do a lot of stop and go during the winter with some idling so I'm sure I get some cylinder wash down which isn't good at all. I do tow during snowmobiling season, hunting and camping but otherwise it's a daily driver for me and work is about a 5 mintue drive if I lolly gag. I use Fleetguard Stratopore filters with Rotella T 15-40 and I change the fuel filter each time I change the oil as well.
I plan on Chevron Delo 400, every 7500. I will be towing quite a bit on the spring and fall (fishing) and will be backing up with UOA. If several UOA comes back reccemnding longer interval, I'll seriously consider it.
Likewise, I don't understand why people succumb to advertising...then again, maybe I do....the general public does not want the think!
