What's your opinion on whats wrong with my truck? (Video)
Well a month ago I started having a problem where the truck would puff a cloud of blue smoke and idle real rough on the first start up of the day. It went to the dealership I purchased it from, and I said I believe the injectors are leaking. I know they ran the injector test but it must not have shown anything and they also said they couldn't get it to idle rough or blow blue smoke. They had it there 3 mornings and for 3 mornings it wouldn't do it, hmm.
So I got it back and the first day I had it back it did it 6 times that day, not just the first start of the day, but everytime the truck had sat for more than 2 hours. Obviously the problem had gotten worse. I took a video of the truck doing this just for proof.
Anyways it went back into the same dealership this Monday for the same reason, because I believe it has leaking injectors. Well they called me back today to say that my truck was ready. The guy was like "some blue smoke on start up is normal", I thought to myself it has never ever blown blue smoke in the 23k miles I have driven it. He said that they had a new TSB to update the PCM for rough idle & sluggishness, I thought to myself again, it was never sluggish, it ran like a top, it just wouldnt start right. And if someone can answer this, I don't think any TSB's came out within the last 3 weeks and doubt that is the fix.
So he said the tech took it for a drive and that it seemed alot better but like I said, I highly doubt this is the fix and if it isn't then it's going to a different dealership. I had been talking to $oC@l CTD about this as he just had 2 injectors replaced and my video looks almost the same as his. Anyways what do you all think is wrong with it? I think its the injectors leaking and am pretty confident in that assessment. Thanks

Yeah, your truck has leaky/disfunctional injectors...I see that you have 23K miles on the truck roughly, you HAVE changed the fuel filter, right? If so, it's injectors 100%...show them that video...if they say that it's "Normal" refer them to their show lot and have them start EVERY Cummins there and see how many of THOSE vehicles do that...Morons

Exactly. Haven't changed the fuel filter yet, I'm waiting for the new one which should be coming in the mail anyday now. It's definately not normal, it's only puffed a slight, slight blue haze 1 real cold morning when it wasn't plugged up but never anything of this magnitude. The kicker is, it started doing it to me the day after it got the oil changed, AT THE DEALERSHIP, hmm, coincidence?.

I change my filters every 10k miles
It is injectors. There is NO scan tool test that will show it either. Tell the lazy technician to keep the truck over night. Drop the exhaust manifold off it. Next morning have someone start it while he watches the exhaust ports. He will then see which cylinders are making the smoke. Replace those injectors and all will be well again.

No no no
, when I say I haven't changed the fuel filter yet, I mean that I haven't changed it since the problem started. Don't worry I'm very particular about maintenance, it was changed right at 15k with a 7 Micron Fleetguard, but I may start going to every oil change(7500) instead. A new Baldwin 5 micron is what is on its way to me now to replace the one that is in the truck at the moment.
I got the truck back this evening and told the tech I wanted to go back there and start it myself to see that it didn't do anything. It looked like had a slight blue haze on start up but I couldn't tell fully as it was kind dark at that time. I'm going to let it sit for a day or two so it really has time to cool off, and then I'll see what it does. I still think its going to go right back to blowing smoke and idling rough.
On the phone today, the tech told me, "they performed a TSB on it for the sluggishness/rough idle and a tech took it out and drove it and he said that it seem to be much better and it was working fine. The reason we didn't find it the first time (Tuesday after labor day) may be because the TSB wasn't out then and not enough people had complained of the problem." Well as I said, I never had a problem with sluggishness and it feels the same now as it did before. The TSB they performed was "18-041-05", which from what I can find has nothing to do with the problem I stated I was having. Here's a link to it if you would like to see: http://www.dodgeram.info/tsb/2005/18-041-05.htm
Also that TSB came out on 12/20/05, by the calendar I go by, that wasn't 3 weeks ago

As others side, change the offending injectors, then the fuel filter. Then change the filter no more than 10K thereafter with the 7 micron filter.
I am a Cummins engineer specializing in mechanical development of low-pressure fuel systems-- including the filtration.
Granted, I'm still new at this job, but I've learned enough to recommend the advice in this thread.
