Ding ding ding! We have a winner! As a bonus homework question, go ask the sledpullers what manual transmission they use. You'll find out just how weak that nv4500 is! (Hint: many of them use it, and put it through TERRIBLE abuse.)

I have beaten mine like Rodney King. I've broken not one but two stock dana 80 limited slip units, dropped the clutch at 3500 rpm in 3rd gear during a burnout contest, drag raced it numerous times, but the transmission has yet to give me a problem. The 5th gear nut problem has been addressed by a previous owner, though I don't know which fix he used. I have towed fema trailers approximately 25k miles with it, quite often utilizing torque FAR in excess of what the stock engine could produce. I have had no problems with the transmission. Oh, and it has 267k on it now.

Yeah, they're dropping like flies. The sledpullers and I will tell you all about it.

I am doing homework on the market right now as I will be purchasing in say 45-60 days. I see the pluses to say a 03 vs. an 05 (305 over the 325) so how about the difference in the 5 spd vs. the 6 spds? Is the 6 geared better for highway? Stronger? No granny on the 5 spd?

Let's not get into 2005's having the 6 NV5600 vs. the 6 G56 - that to me is an even match and I would take either.

I am looking to see if the 03 is worth it over the 05 and now I am onto the ore I want to row.

Thanks in advance!

J.
The NV56 and G56 transmissions might be a wash but the clutches are not. I'd take the single plate over the dual mass flywheel anyday. Better zero throttle launch capability and can handle more torque longer. Plus the dual mass flywheel (also called a self adjusting clutch) like to come out of adjustment.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought in '03 the 5 speeds were a "standard output" motor somewhere around 275Hp and the 6 speeds were the "high output" motors at 305Hp. I also thought there was some internal differences like oil cooling jets pointed at the pistons (or am I getting this confused with the turbo VW diesels)???

your right, except the standards were 250hp (or 235 in Cali) with the nv45.

The standard motor pistons are gallery cooled (splashed by crank webs up at the bottom of the piston). The HO's used nozzles that sprayed oil directly onto the piston.

i run a nv4500 and will put it up to any 6spd and see if it can take the abuse. yea mine has it share of problems but most of that has been due to the fact that i work the crap out of my trucks. my 03 will run with the best of them and still get good mileage towing a trailer at 75. gets about 12 pulling my 40ft that weighs 8k by itself. besides check around and see the problems the 6spder's are having seems their are some problems with those trannies just different then 5spd's
