New to thread and diesels with a question about a clatter???

When I'm just tooling around town at about 1200 RPM and I romp on it it makes quite a "clatter" from 1200-1800 RPM, is this normal? Thanks.

Hey Snow

What constitutes clatter?

That's like saying your computer is making a whirling noise.

It could be anything. Some clatter is normal, and some is not. Depends on where its coming from, the intensity, the orientation with engine rpm and load, etc etc... How many miles do you have. Does this clatter happen if you leave your trans in low and hit over 1800?
If in neutral, have the wife hit the accelerator and try to figure out where its coming from. Watch your limbs around moving parts cause that engine will not feel a thing when it rips a hand or finger off.

I think I've heard of injector issues on the 3rd gen CR motors, but I don't own one, have not worked on one, and can't be of more help.

Just read your sig... looks like you just purchased this thing off the lot not more than 2 weeks ago.

Find out where the clatter is coming from. Its my bet that your hearing the tappets ticking which could most likely be considered normal.

Either that, or your timing might be too far advanced. I know if I get into mine before it warms up, I get it too.

When I hear a "clatter" I rise to my feet to see what's the matter. Ok, it's too early in the year for that

But seriously, I hear it too. I believe it is the sound of a 2nd Gen with about 165 pillows jammed under the hood.

You can just barely make out the Cummins clatter because these trucks are so darn quiet.

Be prepared to find all sorts of noises that the 2nd Gen guys have never heard .

You want to hear some serious clatter drive a psd at 1000 rpm in the winter!

Or it could be the 3rd event of the injector firing. I hear mine (sounds like the motor is dieseling or out of time) around that range. I can get it to make noise in 'N' or driving down the road. Drives me up the wall. I keep checking oil level to make sure Injector is not going bad dumping fuel into the motor, none yet. Some days it sounds worse but it just might be me. I think it is normal.

It only has 12000 miles on it and is stock, never any engine mods to my knowledge. In neutral it does not have any "clatter" at all. It's not really loud, my wife didn't notice until I pointed it out. I'm kind of thinking it's normal but I'm just not sure...alot different than driving a gasser.

Is it an NV5600, 48re, or G56?.

The NV5600 with single plate clutch has alot of driveline clatter in that rpm range. The G56 has the dual mass flywheel which absorbs/dampens that clatter (at the cost of nasty natural frequency resonance at 450rpm and can't handle as much torque).

If its a 48re, there is clatter, but you'll just have to "live" with it. If you are looking for fuel efficiency mods, a good one is to advance your timing with either the Rokktech or the tone wheel mod but take note, it will have even more clatter. You'll have to ask yourself what it more important better NVH or fuel economy? For me, I'd take a little more clatter anyday.

Noise, Vibration, and Harshness

It was the NVH engineers that brought about the dual mass flywheel and they are always complaining about clatter.
