I get the same color stuff on my stock wheels. About 1/2 of what you have there. Most of it comes off in the spray wash. I assumed it was brake dust. I see you are in Chicago a lot heavier traffic than here in Rockford. I still thing it's brake dust IMO.

Yes it's brake dust. All the rain loosens it up and makes it run out to the outside of the rims...

That storm was crazy lats night VikingD, it was mostly east of me. That storm reminded me of the summer I spent in Oklahoma City, that dryline and moist gulf air made some interesting shows. It really hasn't rained much around here so I'm sure the brake area just got a good "spray wash" yesterday.

Brake Dust or U-Joint dust?

I had a front hub go on me and noticed as I replaced it the axle u-joint looked like rust dust coming from it. Checked the other side and no dust at all. I only replaced the hub on that side and now and then, I will notice on that side only, reddish dust all over the rim. Probably after a good rain storm but haven't checked on that. I do noticed that most of the time, I do see brake dust on both rims if I don't keep up with the cleaning of the truck. But like I said, now and then, that side only (with the possibly bad axle u-joint) reddish dust.

4wd still works just fine, don't hear any clicking or anything. Haven't noticed any movement up/down play on that u-joint but will probably replace before winter sets in.

Check your u-joint to see if both look the same, clean or one slightly rusty. I hate how they don't have any grease fittings.

I'm with nuttymopar - looks like u-joint to me too.

Crawl underneath and take a look, should be pretty obvious if it is.
