Question What the heck is going on here?

Not here to start a war as I will probably? be buying a dodge cummins in the next year. all I heard is that the cummins is bullet proof. Sounds like a lot of guys have the rough idle, white smoke, mileage issus, knock, infector problems and maybe a few other problems. Are these issues with cummins or dodge? Is the common rail injector system a problem, similar to ford? Let me know your thoughts. Again not a war or a bashing against cummins/dodge. It jsut seems like these are similar problems that ford has. The fella that works on my dads 7.3 ps, told him to stay away from the 6 oh no.

Thanks. Great reading on this board!!!!!!!!!

Anything will have a few rough edges in it's first year or two of being produced... it just happens. But when you compare what's happening with these compared to the Ford's, it's like saying a slight case of athelte's foot is the same as getting ganggreene and losing a toe.

i have an 03 with 52,000 miles on it and am very happy with it. only problem i've had is the lift pump went out. just happened last week. my hunting partner has a new ford and isn't very happy with it at all. been in the shop 3 times in the last 4 months.

keepontrying, I gotta admit you do sound like a troll with that post. "Again, I'm not bashing" either.

Lots of guys - I'd hazard a WAG that most of us have no issues with our trucks/CTDs, other than wiping those silly grins off their face. No problems here - other than that silly grin.

I think that fella who works on your dads 7.3 ps would like for you to purchase one of them ps's so he can have more work.

If you're looking for problems, anywhere, you can find them (or they'll find a way to find you). For example, our CTD's don't have any sparkplugs to pop out of the engines like the Ford 5.4's ....

Again, Welcome Aboard .....

this website is a great resource, however, it promotes whining from everyone..
sure..every truck has its problems, but that is just life...cummins makes a bomb proof motor and it is by far the best option...i'm working on 15k in 3 months and have had zero problems...
i think everyone is pretty negative..yeah..there has been white smoke, bad weather stripping along the windows...blah..blah..blah..but at least dodge has tsb's....that not a bad thing..they are constantly improving apon mistakes and fixing them for free...thats better than i can say about other truck manufacturers..

Not a troll here as I know i have had issues with my ford. piston slap, passenger head gasket leak, and many other small anoying items. And yes I have read about the 5.4 launching spark plugs. The ford tech was honest with my dad and said stay away from the 6.0.

I would like to buy the cummins and am just making points that I always heard it was a bullet..but is seems like it has its issues too.

Nothing is 100% perfect. Buy the Cummins and you won't be disappointed. I've seen a bunch of "Buy-Back" 6.0's for sale on Ford lots but have yet to see a "Buy-Back" Cummins anywhere. I'm sure there are a few out there but not nearly like the 6.0's.

2004.5 only small problems like weather striping on door other than that great truck I would buy another one if something happened to this one.I would like better MPG but that would mean keeping my foot out of it!

An old timer told me flat out last year before I bought my Dodge...You can't afford to rebuild a Ford diesel, you'd go broke, but the Cummins is so easy sometimes they don't even take the motor out just do it right in the truck. Anyway, I just bought my Dodge and most of the people I know all drive em and drive'em good too. One guy has over 700,000 kilometers on his, and putting 250,000 in a year or 2 is really common up here. Lots of running out to well sites in these parts hauling everything you can imagine.

Reading a forum like this tends to slant your idea about problems. The people who post are most often those with problems. People with great, good running trouble free trucks don't post.

I don't read the Ford websites, so only know by hearsay that the 6.0 is having problems. I do know that I was at an event co-hosted by Ford. Several SDs on display. I started talking to one of Ford guys babysitting the trucks. Asked about the 6.0 problems. His response was "What Problems?" I responded with several that I've read about here. Suddenly he didn't have time to talk to me any more. Had go to the can or something.

03 here with 95,000 on the ticker. Only three problems with mine. 1. Pass side sunvisor broke. 2. fuel rail came loose. 3. front left bearing & hub went out at 87,000.

Other than that I love my truck.
