Unhappy Well, I think my tranny is toast

Well, today I think I lost my tranny. I suddenly noticed that it didn't want to go into overdrive, and when it did go into OD it would shift back out of it anytime I pushed the accelerator. Also, when I pulled into my driveway I heard a "chirping" noise? I parked, crawled underneath and it seemed to be comming from the tranny. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I don't even drive hard, have never towed anything, I've had my bullydog set at performance, never did brake stands or even roasted the tires (well, not on dry pavement and not on purpose, in the rain it was a whole different story). Anyhow, I'm going to let it sit for a couple of hours, then test drive it again, I have to drive about 5 miles into town to pick up my new glock! The chirping sound kind of sounds like crickets, what would this be? I'll set my BD back to stock and hope for the best at the dealership if I have to take it in.
Oh yeah, one more thing, does anyone know of a good diesel tranny place in Ventura or Oxnard?

I drove it today, and well, I think there is something definetly mechanically wrong with it. It drives ok, it still seems like it doesn't want to shift into OD, and I was accelerating up a small hill and it rade a raspy metallic sound briefly, so I let up on the pedal and it stopped. The rest of the way home I babied it and it drove fine. I'm worried to even drive it to the dealership, I hope that they'll tow it for me, but yeah, it's definetly going in. Looks like I may be broke for a while...

I see in the suncoast ads that the Allison 6-speed conversion is available for Dodges...or just get your 48re beefed up as long as it has to be fixed.

Hahah! Probably WAAAAAYYYYYY too much money for the allison conversion! Also, I don't think that the dealership will install aftermarket parts, and I'm going to try to get them to at least fix it up to normal condition for as little out of pocket money possible! I don't race this truck, have no intention of doing pulls or hitting up the 1/4mile with it, but it would be nice to not have to worry about major components breaking. Are the TCI or B&M convertors worth a ****? They're a lot less pricey... and uncle sam doesn't pay us nearly enough!!!

I set it back to stock and removed ALL the outlook stuff. The only thing left in it is the EGT probe, but since I've been asking them for a mopar performance pyro gauge I think I'm ok for that! It goes into the dealer manana. BTW when I set it back to stock the idle was so much smoother...

hate to hear yer having trouble. i put a bullydog on my ram and accidentaly pulled a horse trailer on the performance setting instead of towing and my tranny started acting funny like yours. mine did the o.d. thing but started messing up in second also. it would jump in and out of gears for no reason (or so i thought) i took it to my local dealer who has awesom diesel tecs and found that the cummins is set at the edge of the trans limitations. evidentaly the added power was never factored in by dodge therfore the stock 48r cannot hold the added torque. i ask the tech what exactly happened and he advised that the line pressure is not adaquate in stock valve body calibration and that the extra power caused slippage, that in turn caused excessive heat. the tech advised that the torque convertor had "balooned" as a result of everything else. he advised me that since it was stock and under warranty the rebuild would be free but if i plan to "turn it up" later the stock trans would probably do the same thing. he said that a bd valve body and torque convertor would be the only way to go to hold whatever i do to it later. i ask about b&m and tci and he advised me that thay use gas engine mentality on their diesel stuff and the bd brand was in several super hi-po trucks he has done and thay work great. i have later heard debates on how many clutches that some convertors have as opposed to others but i am mucho happy with mine. i hope this helps.
good luck man

If you have the $$$$$$ money to throw into the Allison conversion, than go for it, but if not, I would just go DTT, Goerend, etc on your 48re and not look back. IMO you will be 98% as happy with the built 48re vs a built allison conversion, plus the fact that you will have spent a significant amount less money (building the 48re)...

just my oppinion.

Thanks for the replies guys! I turned it in today, and the first thing they said when I explained the problem was, "what size tires are those?" I told them they were 35"s, and they were all like "oh well no wonder why, those things are HUGE!". Idiots. If they won't cover it with warrenty, it'll probably cost me $2000+ so if that's the case I'll just refuse service, drive it home and probably buy a tranny. I don't need a fully built tranny as it's basically a DD, so what would be in my price range? I'm looking at around $2k to spend. Well, actually I'd better wait to see what they say is wrong, if it's just the convertor, I'll put in a nice one and valve body, but if it's all kinds of problems, than I'll have to just buy a whole tranny. Does anyone know any good diesel shops in my area???

wow, made some calls to some tranny places, and it looks like I may be majorly underfunded for this project! I got quoted $4500 +a $1200 core deposit from ATS. I really hope that it's only the convertor, because I could replace it myself, and install a VB too. That would be within my price range. I got all my fingers crossed that the warrenty will cover it though.

Today they told me that they think the convertor bolts were loose, so hopefully it's that simple. I asked how they would have gotten loose and she said something about the "awsome torque" of the cummins! Well, I'm hoping that that's all that it is so I can stop worrying about it! They said they'd call me around 3pm today to let me know. I've got all my fingers and toes crossed!

I got my truck back today, and it didn't cost me one dime! They said that the convertor bolts were loose, so they put some locktite on them and retorqued them. It seems to have fixed the problem, so I got the problem fixed, and a free transmission fluid change! Hahah! I rented a car for two days, and they covered the first day, so all it ended up costing me was one day's rental from enterprise! Well, I guess that a convertor and valve body are soon to be on the list of upgrades....

I see the Allison conversion on the Suncoast website ad, but with no other information other than it is available. Does anyone have a cost of the Allison conversion or the 48RE core charge?

Hell for $6K you can have a your 48 built in to one nice HD trans. So now why would anyone want to install a stock Ally for that kind of $$ or is it a rebuilt trans?
