Weird noise?

I'll try to describe this the best I can. While truck is sitting at idle I get a weird popping sound coming from the exhaust and in the engine compartment it sounds like a compression leak, but all cylinder have compression when on test. Sounds almost like a valve is bent, but if it was bent it would progressivly get worse.

So what me and my mechanic have thought is the timming could be out, because this motor was recently re-built by another mechanic. Also this happend before minus the exhaust noise(only engine compartment) and replaced head gasket and went away but then to still had compression when tested, no leaks. Any other ideas what this could be before we go taring in to the engine.

Would it make the compression leak noise in the engine compartment? Sounds like a dry bearing sound on the beltside(chs chs chs sound).

cp3 or injector noise would be my guess.

Just replaced all six injectors, all so forgot to mention about every 3 or 4 starts takes a little longer to crank almost like low pressure at the injectors but when when tested was good, on the long cranks you can here the starter sort of stumble then goes back through and fires thats why we are leaning towards the timming. Very well could be the cp3 though i'll go over that with the mechanic. Any more ideas?

Thanks i'll talk to the mechanic about that, it sure does sound like a pumping noise. Also when you remove the valve cover and crank it sorta sounds like an old gaser, very loud pop to it.
