Weird engine noise after cold start???
obviously you all know i got a new engine.its awsome. no black smoke runs clean etc...starts awsome. only thing i noticed after 2 cold starts is that there seems to be a knock coming from front end of engine it totally goes away after 15-20 seconds. and will never do it again throughout the day. not until morning again.....
there total warranty so im not worried im just ticked off...

For what's it's worth, my 06 has done this since new. First start of the day it sounds like someone is tapping a wrench against the front of the block. It goes away after a few minutes and doesn't happen till the next cold start. Truck now has 61K miles and no problems. Just assume this is normal.
New - YES, broken in - NO. Give it some time, get used to how it sounds and learn what may be normal. You have a warranty, you could have to use it, or maybe not. Give it time. You cannot compare the sounds of this motor to the last one because it had problems. If you start hearing things like the last one before it went south, that's different.
My grid heater coil light stays on for about 10 seconds on the average, sometimes it stays on a little longer, must depend on the temp? My truck is NOT plugged in, parked out in the open cold. This am it was 16*F, stayed on about 15 seconds.
I have a PacBrake so my warmup is much faster. In about 1 minute or so the needle on the temp gauge starts moving, about 3 minutes or so the brake kicks off - 160*s at that point in time. When it's this cold I wait to drive until the brake kicks off.
I think it would be normal for most all engines to make a little more tapping/clatter at startup. Even thought there would be some oil in the cylinders and head, overnight drain down happens, takes a second or two for oil to be pumping and saturating the head.
I have 40K on my truck with NO problems, 3 years of the same startup in cold weather. I would say that your new engine is normal at this point.
By the way, I know it's hard to be just normal, but you WILL get used to it I'm sure. Once you have gotten used to it it will be easier to pick up on something that could be wrong.

I know you just got your engine and may want to wait before switching oils. But I noticed my engine become much much quieter when I switched from Regular Rotella 15w40 to Syn Rotella 5w40........on cold starts. It just seems to flow so much better it's like starting up on a warm day, from my experience with it. Im sure any oil in 5w40 would be the same.

You say knocking... do you mean ticking? Sounds like a motor ticking after you shut it down, but louder?
Normal... mine has done it since I bought it... something about the injectors purging air or something to that nature.
As long as it's a 'tic tic tic' and not a 'KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK'...
