Great write-up Totallyrad! I just did mine last week. I decided to tackle it on my own after getting a quote for over $325! I wish I had your write up while I was doing it. I did it about the same as you did on my own (even the fan shroud mounting bolts) and got her done in a little more than an hour. Thanks for the tip about the rebate/discounts from Advance! I try to only use Advance Auto due to great past experiences with them! I'll have to remember the 4/5 cylinder breather line for next time!

Great info.
Just did the 2nd water pump on my 2004 yesterday.
My shroud must be different as there are no supports to unbolt and it doesn't bellow in or out, it's solid hard plastic.

FYI... one of the ears on the water pump(the one the goes upwards) is longer that the other, so there is only one way that the pump can be installed, no need to mark a top or bottom or to try and orient the weep hole, you don't have a choice.

 

Thanks for the great write up. Just did mine today at 75K. I pulled the airbox also and removed the lower bolt on the shroud, made for more than enough room. Went smooth as silk.

I'm gonna do mine in a couple of days. I already have the parts and stuff, but I'm doing the belt and tensioner too. I just looked at the pump and it is the older style. The newer one is a more efficient design, maybe they upgraded for the 6.7.

Do I have to remove the fan and shroud to do the belt?

What's the best way to flush the whole system?

Mine is still on the original coolant and pump at 256,000 miles.

Raspy, you do not have to remove the fan and shroud to change the pump. The suggestions are in the write up.

The only info I can find about flushing is to just drain and re-fill. I was hoping there is a way to back flush.

OK, my bad. If you're careful, I believe you can work the belt around the fan. Space is very limited so work on a cold engine if you can.

 

Great job and pics I have an 07 5.9with 107,400 mi. and the water pump just went so I guess I'm lucky. Can I assume your precedure should be basically the same with mine?

 

Thanks Twincam! I would think they're the same although it could be mildly different. The biggest aggravation will be if you get an air bubble in the system. Make sure you turn your heat on and set the temp to high for 30 seconds or so before you turn the truck off and get started on the swap. Also remember to pull the heater hose on the top of the head like in the write up.

 

Nice post. I replaced my water pump several years ago. Seemed like it was a couple of hour project. The toughest part was wrestling the pump out and/or removing the fan w/o damaging the radiator. I also did not get all of the air bubbles out. I made the mistake of leaving the radiator cap off while initially refilling & letting the engine idle. I believe that if the radiator cap is put on and the engine is idled, that it will self bleed. You just have to be careful to keep refilling the expansion tank.
