Valvolene Premium Blue...
ptgarcia is right you can switch back and forth with no ill affects. it is just what you prefer to use. if you change your oil alot then probably just save the extra money.

i change mine at 5k with valovolie pb, but im fixing to make the switch to synthetics. why does out owners manual say we can go 15k on an oil change with light duty and 7.5k on severe duty when cd in mn stated cummins says 10k. there are to many discrepencies with DC and cummins!!

I used Premium Blue Extreme Synthetic in my '03....never had a problem....never leaked or burned any....good stuff....the '07 is going to get a dose soon
Just remember if it's the newer CJ oil you might to have to shorten the oil drain intervals due to the fact the new oil has less additives because of lower emissions and ULSD. So if you're still running LSD and or heavily overfueled go with the shorter intervals.

I'm on my second change of the Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme... at 15,000 mile changes with Fleetguard filters. Prior to using the synthetic, I used the Valvoline Premium Blue at 7,500 mile intervals with Fleetguard filters. The exception was at the first 4,000 miles- I used a Mopar filter as I hadn't ordered any Fleetguards yet. Before the next oil change, I will have a sample of the oil analyzed and either continue using Valvoline's synthetic, return to their non-synthetic, or mix the two.
For your interest, take a look at TDR's web page here. There is a link to a .pdf version of an article under the summation entitled "CI-4 Plus Lube Oil Availability Problem?", or just click here for it.
In that article, you'll find quite a bit of information on oil and it's additives, CI-4 and CJ-4 differences, as well as numerous off-the-shelf samples' property results and their rating by an additive analyst.

i used valvoline pb on my 06 and then switched to pb extreme at 9000 miles . if it has the cummins logo on the front of the bottle its good enough for me. i have seen no negatives from switching to synthetic at 9200 miles . truck runs and starts great and i do not use a drop. so its up to you but i think valvoline pb. oils are pretty good

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have just over 31k on my truck. I use Valvoline PB. 1 oil change I used Rotella because it was the only oil I could find with the CJ-4 rating. All the fuel stations in my area have switched to the ULSD. Therefore, I want to stick with CJ-4 oils. BUT, I want to go with synthetic oils from now on. PB Extreme is CI-4+, so that's out! Is there a good CJ-4 synthetic diesel oil? I already know of Amsoil.......any others?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And I used the Valvolene premium blue 15/40. I noticed it is now rated CJ4 for the newer engines as well. There is a nice article on the front page of the TDR site that says we should stock pile all the CI4+ oil you can muster. Can't find any around here, so whats the hype??? Thanks!

Yes, you are correct. My 2006 was made to use CI-4+ oil. It also was made to burn LSD. LSD is no longer available in my area. So, I have to burn ULSD. I might be wrong, but the way I understand it, CI-4+ is the right oil if you burn LSD. CJ-4 is the oil to use if you burn ULSD?
From what I understand, CJ-4 is supposed to have something added to it to make up what you lose going from LSD to ULSD.
I may be wrong, if I am, please let me know. I love learning everything I possibly can about our diesels.
Yes, CJ oils are backwards compatible and are for use in the 6.7 and ANY earleir made diesel engine.. ie the 5.9. The only difference is that the CJ has had some additives removed as per the EPA so the drain intervals are shorter. I found 9 gallons of Delvac 1300 CI+4 that I plan to use until I can switch to synthetic.... roper

Here's what I emailed Cummins,
(I have a 2006 Ram with the 5.9L Cummins. I only burn Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel fuel. I'm using CJ-4 oil now. Are my oil/filter change intervals still 7500 miles severe duty and 15000 miles light duty?
Just wanted to make sure nothing has changed with the use of the "new" fuel and CJ-4 oil.)
This was Cummins response,
(Thanks for your Email message. You have contacted Cummins, Inc. at our Customer Assistance Center located in Columbus, Indiana. This is our worldwide headquarters and has been our home since Clessie Cummins founded the company February 3, 1919.
You maintenance schedule should be the same as before John. The new fuel meets a federally mandated fuel lubricity requirement and the CJ-4 is a low ash oil used to also help meet emissions standards. Both of these items are under scrutiny of many different authorities.

Being I live in a Farm area and have family who work for them, here is what I’ve heard about a few farmers who burn Off Road ULSD just like most of use in our engines. The farmers are not happy with how well CJ-4 oil is holding up in their farm equipment and have had to shorten their oil drain intervals. So as I see if they are not happy with it then I will not take any chances and will not use CJ-4 oil in my engine at this time.
