I'm coming up on my second oil change at 7000miles. First change was with Delvac15w40.
As the colder weather approaches, I'd like to switch to a 5w40 and I'd like to go synthetic. I know it's early for synthetics, but I was thinking about running 1/2 syn 5w40 and 1/2 Delvac15w40 since I have several gallons of that left over. Any suggestions?

I was told never to mix weights of oil. Mixing brands they say is ok, but I do not like even mixing brands.I run 15-40 super blue and then 10-30 super blue in the winter. I was thinking of 0-40 for the winter.

 

Unless you frequently see temps below zero 15w40 oil will be fine for the winter.

 

just switch over and don't worry about it... i switched over to synthetic at a little over 10,xxx km [±6,500miles] with no ill effects... i now run 0w40 [first started with 5w40] and will keep running that year round until it gets hard to find...

 

Ok I frequently see temps below 0 down to -50. So what weight would you recommend? I'm due for the first oil change since I've owned the truck. Any special brand, synthetic v. fossil, 15w40 v. 5w40.

 

I use 0W40 synthetic in the winter, and 15w40 dino oil in the summer, changed every 5000 km.

being that I live in the same sub arctic conditions, I can assure you that the 0w40 is an excellent choice, just a little pricey.

also, once we step down past the -50 mark, I tend to plug in an oilpan heater (alaska pad) it really helps those slightly cool morning starts.

Ok thanks for the info. I have the block heater, oil pan heater, trans pan heater and such. It just hasn't been through a winter yet.
