Used 5.9 common rail what to look out for when buying used

Hey guys,

Im looking at this 2006 24v 5.9 common rail with a manual transmission and four wheel drive. I was hoping you all could give me some pointers on what to look for such as potential red flags, common wear and tear items, how to find any possible past modifications, etc. All advice is welcome i believe the truck only has 46k on it but it would be nice to look for anything that will give me a heads up as to what im getting into.

Thanks ya'll,
CB

Try to talk to the man that owners it to see if he has done any thing to it. Then Run the Vin on car fax. Talk to the dealer.

Going to the dealer this weekend and already ordered up carfax.

The carfax says no accidents reported and the very few service records are ones which are merely for cosmetic upgrades.

id talk to the owner about maintanice, how often he changed fuel filters etc. you can see if it has has or had an egt probe in the exaust or a boost gauge on the intake horn, this could be signs of a chip or if he was towing heavy. you could bring it to the dealer and have them look at the computer to see if theres any signs of a chip in the ecm, unless its a smarty . there pretty good trucks not any major problems with them to look for.

The 2006 model year is notourious for A/C problems in the air handling system. The door that swings between outside air and inside recirc, breaks at the hinge and falls in front of the fan. Thus, it sounds like a hurricane with very little air at that vents.

This is not a problem, just a pain. There is a rubber hose behind the turbo that is used, I think as a vibration damper in the pipe system that leaks. Since you have a manual tranny, you won't think its tranny fluid like everyone without the manual will. The little hose has a heat sheld on it. (Aluminum in color)

Number four injector line tends to break. Check the injection support lines with the blue injection line holder. Tighten them up and check the #4 more often.

Check the viscous fan coupling connection (drivers side at bottom of radiator) to make sure its tight. I put a small tie wrap around mine as it was loose and the fan did not work. Also while under there make sure its still there. Sometimes the fan takes out the wiring. The fan clutch is controlled by the computer and not simply by heat. Let the truck get to temp, let it idle with the A/C on. See if the fan engages. You'll be able to tell. Big Fan lots of air when it works. I've heard the A/C on is the key to making it work.

I think that's most of them. There are many threads on each one of these subjects. Search the forum for more info. I really like my 06 so far. Drove a 96 12V and a 2000 24V before I got this truck.
