Upshift problem along with harder pedal resistance?

I have an 03 automatic transmission 5.9L that has started to have an occasional problem with delayed upshifting. Along with the delayed shifting it seems like the gas pedal is presenting more resistance when I push down to get it to upshift.

The problem usually starts when I'm in a parking lot or somewhere where I have to go forward and back a few times to get out of a tight spot. After awhile it just goes back to normal. Checking the auto transmission fluid shows a tad high but not by much.

It's a different feel from just turning the OD off, it just seems like it takes about 500 rpm or more to up shift to the next gear, with that strange feeling of the throttle showing resistance to pushing down.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Ron W.

I have an 03 and when the transmission gets hot, as in summer or stop and go traffic or I have issue with the transmission cooler thermostat. The throttle valve in the valve body gets bindie and you can feel it in the pedal. It won't shift unless you push on the pedal to get the throttle valve to release. Because we still have the TV cable you are able to feel whats going on. Sonnax makes a kit for the issue you are describing. Requires a valve body drop. Mine does it every now and then. When it does it I just give the pedal a heavier foot. Next filter change I'm going to put the Sonnax fix in it. Not so much for the sticking part but for the pedal buzz when things warm up.

Truckboy2,

Thanks for the feedback, mine isn't temp related but it's close to what I'm experiencing.

One thing I didn't mention is the tranny was rebuilt by Western Transmission in Idaho a few years back and when I called today they seemed to think I should have the governor pressures monitored? is that similar to your issue with the throttle valve?

thanks

Ron

Mine has done this for years. I have the GM pressure solenoid pack from Suncoast Transmission. Mine will do it during normal temperature operation. Get to where you're going, shut it off. Restart, reverse, drive she'll stick. The reasearch I've done over the last years... Binding throttle valve. I guess it gets worn and things start to stick. I would think the transmission rebuilder you had would have some imput on this to help you out. Even the boneheads at my local dodge dealership new the worn throttle valve was an issue. I've got about 150g's on the transmission and she's just a tight as it was new. The only issues were the funky shift with the solenoid pack which the Suncoast solenoid pack cured and the sticky throttle valve which will be warrantied by Truckbouy when the weather quits freezing my creaky old bones.

OP back again.....After some more testing this problem doesn't occur if I start it up put it in drive and go, shifts perfectly as long as I don't stop. If I stop and move the shift lever from D to R or D to N or any shifting for that matter it will bring on the problem of delayed up shifting.

Trying to understand what that has to do with the issue
