Dodge wouldn't use the AAM axles if they couldn't handle the torque of the rest of the drivetrain, including the Cummins. I too was a Dana believer until I bought my '06 Dodge. I still think the front axle [I]looks[I] a little strange.

 

If you were to disassemble the unitized wheel bearing you would find there are in fact an inner and outer bearings in it.

 

I put manuel hubs on my dodge 02 off a Dana 60 with a little machine work and mix matching of parts off the shelf and $300 bucks later, I got a improvement of 4mpg, but my unit brgs were bad before the switch.

 

I don't remember but it's about .025 clearance.
