Say you were getting 13 liters per 100 kms, convert liters to imp gallons and kms to miles. 13 divided by 4.5 =2.88, 100 divided by 1.6 = 62.5. Divide 62.5 by 2.88 = 21.7 mpg. If anybody asks me what I get for milage I just say I get under 30mpg.

Litres per 100km - It's a metric thing...not sure who's bright idea it was, but blame it on the Liberals. You get used to it, sort of. Less is better - running OEM tires on winter fuel I'm getting about 12.5 - 13.0 L/100. All I know is that when I load up the camper, I need a bigger tank.

Amen to that. I can only wish that King Ralph would be our next primeminister.

In reality though the metric system is referred to as SI which stands for System International. It was originally invented by, you guessed it, the french, and it is based on all calculations being the ,multiples of ten. Such as 10L is 1 decilitre and 100L is one kilolitre and so on.

Having said that in Canada. most of our transportation regulations are still in Imperial (not US) system. For example, According to Transport Canada you can transport 50 Imperial Gallons of Diesel, with out having it secured in a slip tank or similar device. In this case 1 Imperial Gallon is equal to 4.05 Litres.
Just my 2cents worth.

I built an excel file that all you need to do is imput how many Litre's you fill up with, how many KM you drove and it automatically calculates and records L/100km, US MPG and Imp MPG. If anyone wants it just PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

For our American neighbours...if you want a US version of this file I can modify it and send it your way also.

This needs to be repeated. I works out exactly, miles per Imperial gallon is 20% higher than miles per US gallon.

20 becomes 24,

23 becomes 27.6.....

try it out and save your calculators..

Yep, Tundra is right on mpg Canadian is exactly 20% or 1.2 times the US mpg. I usually talk mpg US cause most of yall are from there. If I'm talking to the local Chevy owner I use the mpg Canadian cause its bigger. ks

You got it Tundra. All you have to do is use your overhead and add 20%!

Wow alot of input on this thanx everyone.I don't know why but i still refer to imperial gallons in my mind to figure out MPG.When i realized the overhead was U.S gallons i was shocked at what great mileage we get with these large trucks.

I too assumed the overhead would read in Imp. gals... so DC could show "better mileage". Afterall, we don't use US measurements for anything else, everything was Imp. and now much is metric. ha, I'm getting better mileage than I thought I was... can't complain about that though it'll never be enough
Metric is actually a much easier system to use once you learn it, it's all 10's... very simple though the L/100km is not used much, here anyhow. If you learn it young you realize how much easier it really is to work with... no more fractions!... for one.
Ramcam, you should fill in your Signature so we can see details of your ride. I wish my overhead would show 23.5 mpg!

rather than mess around converting gallons and kms why not just go to you favorite service station and get one of those handy slide converters that give you your mileage in both lts per 100 km and miles per canadian gallon...save yourself a few brain cramps but if you must do it the hard way there are 4.5 ltrs in our gallon and 1.6 kms in a mile ...

Hi Guys
Don`t want to be pedantic, but theres 4.546 litres to the imperial gallon.
The only way to get an accurate mpg is to neck the tank between journeys and work it from there.Thats assuming the speedo is accurate.

i use nothing but us gallons or liters... imperal gallons are useless in my opinion.. too many miscommunications happen when i start talking gallons. some think us gallons, some think imperal gallons.. a liter is a liter where ever you go in the world. a gallon can be different depending on who you talk to...

and L/100km is easy to calculate too.. just take the liters you filed in the tank, and divide it by how far you went and X by 100 and you have your liters/100km fuel useage..

eg.. 800km, 100 liters = 100 x (100 / 800) = 12.5l/100km

i quickly calculate what my economy is when i fill up, but i don't really track it.

15.3L/100km = 15.3 MPG

Yes, that's the whole idea of switching to the metric system... a globalized system of measurement = no confusion. Much of the rest of the world is on-line, except for...
