Took my truck into the dealer with a howl when I driving. I was thinking it was something in the drive train. They called me and said they have to replace the turbo. Is there a known problem with the turbo on these?

Truck is bone stock except an Air Raid intake system. 35,000 miles on it. Never been bombed. Heaviest I have ever towed is about 6,000 pounds, rock crawler and FB trailer. Run gauges and while towing do not let the EGT's get to high, maybe 1,200 but not for longer periods.

I did have an injector problem about 5,000 miles ago while towing and the crankcase filled with diesel. After I got it back, the howl started, very low at first. I am thing the diluted oil started the bearings in the turbo to go out.

What do you guys think?

 

yeah that is very possible. I work for Caterpillar and have had trucks come in with turbos goin out. and had fuel diluted oil before. In one case i had a camshaft seize but chances of that happening are next to none.

 

I just had my turbo replace on my '03. The tech told me it was leaking internally and needed replacement. This was surprising since I only have 37,000 miles on my truck and never tow. I asked the tech what may have caused the probem. His response was not surprising, not letting the turbo cool after hard driving. The manual states that letting the engine idle for a few minutes will allow the turbo to cool to a safer shut down temp. Thank god for my warranty!!!
