i heard some rumors that the dodge cummins transmissions are not that good especially when you start upgrading them with some mods. is this true? and if so how long do they usually last or should i just right off the bat geta new better transmissions? dose anyone know about how much that would cost? thanks a lot
03 up auto's and 6 speeds(48re/nv5600) have very few problems.None of the autos produce by anyone hold up too well to horsepower mods.Seems like fuel boxes on lower settings do ok.In extreme settings auto transmissions or clutchs in the manuals let go.The 48re(Dodge auto)has had lots fewer problems then Allisons or Torqueshifts according to surveys.Who ever informed you that they have problems probaby thinks Ford owns Cummins also.
To upgrade one depends on a lot or a little.Costs probaby in the $1800 to $3400 range.Others that have done so will and can give you better thoughts on pricing.

The Dodge automatic has always been the weak sister of the trannys(my ATS that was in my highly modified Duramax was awesome--would chirp in every gear when asked to and when I traded it for other suspension reasons had 50k on it with no problems with the engine and drive line). That is still the case esp with mods--currently I have the ATS 5qt pan hoping to do away with any heat issues but once you break it down and install in my case I use ATS products forget about DC doing anything for failures to the driveline and maybe engine! When I get some miles on mine I will most likely upgrade but for the moment leaving it as is.
