Transmission temp pegs gauge

When driving my truck on the highway my trans temp is normal about 180 but when I come to a stop the temp goes up above 300 and takes forever to come back down. I am installing a secondary trans cooler but I have never had a trans do this to this extent. Not an emergency building new trans now just wanting a little insight.

Check the check valve in the factory tranny cooler. It can become stuck with trash.

The first question is, how accurate is the gauge. Put an infrared thermometer on the pan when the gauge is that high. It won't be exact, but it will be pretty close. You don't want to be wasting time fixing a problem that doesn't exist.

I agree with Spooler.

I gutted my valve, drained the fluid, changed the filter, adjusted bands and then flushed the tranny using a full synthetic Dexron VI LV fluid. My tranny runs 20* cooler, shifts better. I was really surprised at the build up of wear material that was gathering on the check ball.

I tried to R&R the check valve and could not get it out. Put some heat to it, it popped but would not come out. What's the trick to get it out?

Used compress air on the back side of it and it should pop out.
