transmission relearn

Can you send the transmission into a relearn by just disconnecting the batteries

My red top optima batteries finally died after 9yrs,,,, first check engine light I ever got,,, put the truck in drive,,,, took forever to get out of first, and the thing wouldn't shift outta 2nd gear. Pulled out the battery charger,,, charged it up,, and it was like nothing ever happened.
