I am looking at buying a 2004 to 2007 dodge cummins i am told that there are 2 transmissions a Getrag and a Mercedes. So can you tell what transmission is what by the serial number of the truck. Any help would be appreciated. By the way witch trans is the better of the two. Thanks Ponch

 

If you are talking about standard transmissions, they used the New Venture six speed until midway through 05 if I remember right. After that they switched to the G56 which I think might be built by Mercedes, but I'm not sure. It's hard to say which is better. I think the G56 has a more "sporty" feel when shifting. The New Venture has a better 6th gear ratio for highway driving. However, in 07 they changed the G56 6th gear to almost match the NV ratio. If you are talking about automatics... I have no clue!

 

04 to 07 auto are all the same 48re, 4 speed, if you go to 07.5 and up you can get the 68re 6 speed, standard dont know.

 

The G56 Mercedes reverse is to the far left and back. Suppose to be a better tranny.
