Transmission behaving badly

My truck has 75000 miles on it. Coming to a stop light, I put on the brakes but it barely slowed down. I had to push really hard to get the truck to stop. So I thought the brakes were shot. Once stopped, it felt like the truck was pushing hard against the brakes so I thought the engine was surging, but the tach indicated idle. Then I pulled away and everything seemed to go back to normal. I parked the truck in my garage and after lunch got back in the truck and started it up. As soon as I put it in reverse, the truck pulled really hard out of the garage, rather than gently backing out as usual. I checked the tach and it showed approximately 750 rpm again. It looks to me like there is a problem with the transmission, but I'm not sure exctly what. Anyone had a similar issue or have any ideas? t
Thanks.

Your torque converter is shot. Time to get your tranny built.

I thought something like that might be the case. Thanks for the reply.
