Which Transmission?

I am going to buy my truck tomorrow =), I have always driven a standard truck but was wondering how good the new automatics are? I plan on throwing a box and a few other things on it so should I stick with the standard or chance the auto?

I have owned
91 5 speed
97 5 speed
99 5 speed
00 5 speed
01 HO 6 speed

I've got the 6-speed, after having owned all makes of auto trannies, and I won't go back to an automatic ever again. This manual is just more fun for me to drive and I like having control of when "I" want to shift and not when the computer says it should. Of course, I think it kinda depends on what a person is looking for. The 6-speed certainly will ensure a loss in a drag race, but it should last a lot longer too, which is what I was going for. The 48RE does seem to be doing nicely in the dependability department though, and I do like the way it shifts.
Since you've owned so many sticks already, I would recommend staying with them, unless your left leg can't handle it anymore.

Hand shaker. Best of the bunch. Driving an auto CTD is like driving a municipal garbage truck.

I will chime in since I have an auto. I love it. came from a stick and love this new auto. I do alot of in town driving (I am a real estate appraiser) so I got sick of shifting. If all I did was tow, I would have bought a stick. You can not beat towing with one!!

Sticks are OK but go for the AUTO. Unless you don't want the Old Lady to drive it

I appreciate the input and after some thought I have decided to stay with the stick =). The post about the auto tranny having problems along with a friend telling me that he has already rebuilt 10 of them at the shop he works at helped convince me to stay away from the auto. Plus I just love being able to shift when I want to. Thanks again for the input
