Ok,

Turns out my 4x4 issues were related to my transfer case. It has been leaking and only had 2-3 onces oil when my mechanic checked it. I have not noticed any oil leaks nor has the previous owner. I suspect it leaks oil when engaged in 4x4.

So I have several options:

1. Fix my transfer case and pray that there is only minor damage. It just started making noise and 4x4 worked well 2 weeks ago. No obvious metal parts observed by the mechanic in the oil or when he checked with a magnet.

2. Buy rebuilt for a cost of $1,800 Canadian.

3. Buy new transfer case $2,200 Canadian.

4. Try and find a used transfer case from auto wrecker. No luck yet but estimated cost is 1,500..

So what do some of you Dodge experts recommend I do?

 

Go to a site like Mopar parts.com they have new transfercases in the 12-1300 $$range.

 

For me, it might depend on how often you plan/need 4x4.

I use mine, but only on occasion or to do some playing in the mud. If you don't have the money to spend, just do the minial repair & see what happens. I don't see it killing anything.
If it continues to have issues-then you will have to spend some money then-the thing is-it might never have another problem again.

I saw a used T-case for an automatic posted on Kijiji in Calgary recently.

 

Transfer case express dose rebuilt cases for a lot less than the numbers posted.

 

They are very very simple to repair. I would wager you could do it yourself. Get a shop manual downloaded and read up on the process.

Only 6 lil bolts hold it to the tranny. A couple driveshafts, a shift linkage and an electrical plug.

After splitting the cases, the bearings are held with snap rings. Thats prolly all thats wrong with it. Maybe a chain too. I would bet all the parts to rebuild it are less than 400 bucks.

Going to be pulling mine apart for an inspection late this summer. I will have around 400k miles on it by then. I will post up a thread with pics when I do it.

I just rebuilt my G56 and couldnt believe how simple this trans is to work on for what they cost rebuilt. Didnt even have 500 bucks in it to rebuild it.

Trannys are all profit. Some are very easy to rebuild by most anyone.

I live in Nelson BC and will look at that add on Kijiji - thanks.

I'm going to pull my tranny and inspect it so see what is wrong. I can't help but think the problem is fixable and will cost a lot less than $2,200.

I will post up what I find...
