Trans temps comparison and ideas
Trans temps comparison and ideas
All...
I've searched and read a lot of these threads and I'm still not clear.
For people with my setup - X-monitor on the factory sensor on a 48RE towing in stop/go traffic or backing into a tight spot.
What trans temp do you see? At what temp would you take some kind of action and what might that action be?
I've never seen my idiot light go on and I've hit 265 while backing up.
In bumper-bumper traffic I've hit 235 and decided to just keep going. Once I got clear of the traffic and began to move steady the temp will drop to 180 in a few minutes. If I'm stuck in traffic anyway - pulling over is not really an option. Even if I could find a place to pull off, then what? Shut down and wait?
Does DC have a position on all this? Is their sensor positioned to see max temps? If they aren't lighting their warning light at 265... where DO they light it? or is my X-monitor possible mis-calibrated? If I had a bad tap and voltage drop into the X-mon I'd expect temps reading low, not high?
Can anyone shed some light? Offer an opinion? I'm completely baffled by all the guys (generally Allison owners) who say "my oh my... if my transmission got over 200 towing I'd just cry"... suck it up! my trans gets hot. now what?

Tranny guy at the Dealership told me the idiot lite comes on at 280 degrees,
at which time you immediatley pull over and throw all your cash and credit cards out the driver side window.

mine not towing is 150 and when tranny was DTT built it went to 160. Towing four atv's it was only 168. something don't seem right as X-monitor tran temp alarm is factory set at 200 anything around 250 is got to be burning tranny up.
Hows engine temp that should be somewhat high as well.
Have you had the check ball check in tranny line there is a TSB on it that it clogs line.
Mine was in dealer for other items and they did that as well.
Might not apply to your year though.

I'm towing 10,000#, I've towed light loads (1 1/2 ton or so) and the tranny doesn't know it's there, same as running unloaded. As long as I'm moving along with TC locked the temps are cool.
Engine temp is always fine, 190-200.
No TSB work on my trans, I'll grab my vin later and check - last time I checked, no tsb's applied.
I can say for a fact that trans temps spiking at 260 do not cause instant trans failure.
If they are causing longer term issues I'm hoping it happens before th 70K mark.... If I can head it off I'd sure like to. Stilll, I bought the truck to tow, so I will tow.

...just saw this on JEGS site
"Transmission oil temperatures will reflect how hard you are working the transmission. The oil begins to break down quickly once it reaches 270°F. Higher temperatures cause transmission life to shorten. Set the limit at 250°F and increase your transmission's operating life."
