Trans fluid change at 30,000 miles

I was planning on taking the truck in for having the trans fluid changed as noted in the manual at 30,000 miles. I figured I would do this because the manual says that they adjust the bands when doing this and I have no idea how to do this nor would I want to try. I was reading in another thread were it was stated that changing the fluid and filter would be all that is needed. If this is true I would do the fluid and filter change myself to save the money. I changed the diff case fluid this morning because the dealer wants $275.00 to do it and it's really pretty easy to do so I figure why not do the trans fluid change next. Just looking for advice.

Thanks

I would have the dealer do the band adjustment and filter change that way it's on the record, then wait about 6 months and have the system flushed with AMSOIL ATF.
I had mine flushed by the dealer 3 months after I bought it.

$275.00 get another dealer! When my truck was at 30k went to the dealer to change filter and fluid. I normally do my own as well but i got a 47re and I want the warranty to be bulletproof. With tax total was $114.48 That wasnt for a flush but just a filter and fluid change. Maybe you could drive down to my dealer in Texas

kelley 15,

If you read the post again you will see that the $275.00 is for the diff case fluid change and that price is in line with what others have said. With that said, I'm still hoping to get some advice on the trans fluid change.

Doing the maintainence items myself is also a convenience thing as well. If I can do it myself I don't have to get the truck to the dealer and then go back after work to pick it up.

Thanks

Changing the fluid and filter is pretty straight forward. I am a novice so to speak but did all my own maintenance @ 30k miles for about $140. The dealer would charge about $120 for just the 48re. 11qts of atf +4, 2.5 for the transfer case and 8 for the 48 re. I used the atf +4 because its the only thing I could find that meets the DC specs. Also did the diffs with 8 qts royal purple 90/140, 4.5 for the rear and 3.5 for the front. If you keep your receipts you should not have any warranty issues.

Per DC the Diff's use 75w/90 NOT the 90/140. From what DC states then you have VOIDED your warranty on the diffs
Even with the LSD rear you DO NOT need to add anything or even if you tow you stick with 75w/90 per DC & AAM

I mentioned the $275 dealer diff change to a mechanic friend of mine that owns his own shop. He quoted the syn fluid needed as he just did one last week and said the cost would be about $75 total. That is for the diff only, he said the fluid runs about $50 and the labor $25.

I live near Port Huron. To go to Hillsdale would mean a day off from work so any savings gained would be lost by not working and that's to bad for me.

I changed the diff case fluid front and rear this past weekend and the material cost was about $40.00 plus my time which is free on Saturdays. I agree that the $275.00 is way to expensive and that is why I did it myself. The $275.00 price was quoted from the dealer.

I have not asked yet what the price for the trans fluid change is but I will try to get that tomorrow and report back on that. I'm thinking that I will have the dealer do it anyway because I don't want to mess with the trans warranty. If I knew for sure that I wouldn't get any grief for not adjusting the bands I would do the fluid and filter change myself.

Sorry for the typo. I used the 75/140 not 90/140. The 75/140 will not void your warranty! Most dealers I have ever seen would not know the difference between 75/90 much less void your warranty over it. In fact, most are recomending the thicker lube if you tow heavy or frequently. As long as its GL5 and minimun of 75 you should be ok.

Do what makes you feel comfortable and take all the advice for what is worth!
