Trans filter change and UH-OH!!!!!

Well, I just got back from having the filter, gasket and fluid changed in my 2003 and when they dropped the pan they immediately called me over to show me what was in the bottom of the pan.

A little backstory, I bought the truck in June 2007 with 89,142 miles on it, so I don't know how well it was maintained before. It now has 102,420 miles and runs / pulls fine.

Back to the reason for the thread, in the bottom of the pan were 2 pieces of what look like a snap ring, like I said the truck shifts fine but this has me worried and I would like to get it checked out ASAP with a local (Los Angeles, Ca.) Trans shop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit:I guess I didn't state it properly, the place was just a Lube and Oil shop here in L.A., they don't do this kind of work. Plus I had them button it up and drove it back to work and she still runs / pulls / shifts great, like always.

Your going have to have your truck stop smoking those Camels, they are bad for it!

Actually you have one foot in the grave with a broken snap ring but the magnet does not look too bad so you may have found it in time. I would suggest that if you trust the shop you have it at then have them pull it and repair but if you question them at all (maybe they dumped the parts to get extra work) then put it together and take it to someone you trust.

It could also be a good time for an upgrade and this would just be the core you return to the transmission builder of your choice.

Maybe they are doing an add "I'd walk a mile for a Camel".
Hopefully you won't have to. I'd recommend doing what CamperAndy stated.

Plus, If they did the repair, I want to see the other part of the snap ring.

Check for references on this shop also. Maybe someone on this forum has used the shop in question and can provide some firsthand knowledge/experience of the shop in question.

Good luck.

I would be a little leery of this situation...Like JeepMan said, make sure they find the other part of the snap ring. It would be really easy for a shop to drop that in there, make it look like something is wrong, and hook you for a grand plus. Also I am not sure where a snap ring like that could come from and end up in the pan. Not saying it isn't possible since I am not tranny expert, but in my recollection of being in there for fluid changes, seems like anything like that would at least cause some little issue. Snap rings usually are pretty important and if one breaks, usually causes an issue.

That snap ring looks like the ones' normally found in the drum pack. If it came out the clutches and friction steels in the drum pack would'nt be able to lock up together. In that respect you wouldn't have that respective gear or combination of gears. If the rest of the snap ring is still holding the frictions & steels, it's just a matter of time until they fall out as well and then you're "dead in the water".
In my opinion it'd be really hard to get a broken snap ring out of the drum and into the pan, but impossible? Maybe not.

Go to a shop of your choice you can trust and take the part(s) and have them do some pressure checks on the rack with the valve body off. Spend a little now or keep driving and maybe spend alot later..

So I am not sure if it happened recently or has been like that since I bought it, I have only towed with her once, back in July, 12,000lbs and everything was perfect.

I was hoping a local could recommend a shop to drop it off at, I really don't want to put a built trans in it this year, but it looks like I may have to.

And the smokes were for a size comparison.

Try Big Power Diesel up in Palmdale. It's a bit of a drive for you, but it might be worth. They are a dealer for HTS transmissions.

I'm betting they did plant the steel. Of course they only way to tell is if you tear the transmission apart.

Agree with Pull U2, it's amazing how often people don't actually READ the thread... doubt a shop that doesn't do tranny work would plant anything. Oh wait, I don't doubt it, It's pretty much impossible!

After working on these for years now, I must say that I have seen that a bunch! It is the snap ring in the overdrive. The overdrive can be removed without the removal of the transmission, but you will have to replace the snap ring and the drum. There are also some special tools required to rebuild that too. Typically about a 4 hour job, using the tools, including taking the o/d in and out. ( 4x4 will add some time as well! ) I have had about a 50/50 experience doing the repair. With the looks of your pan ( not real dirty or burned fluid! ) I would give yours the thumbs up....it is worth a shot. Others I don;t even waste my time. I have in the past and they usually make it about a month and start having other serious troubles. I'm no tranny overhauler by any means, but have done this particular job many times!

vz,

I'm wondering if you have any experience with a slipping OD unit. I think mine is slipping but not sure that's what it is. It's not the TC as I've replaced that and it doesn't do it in 3rd, only OD.

Sorry to hijack.

Thanks, John

I had a similar problem awhile back when i had my tranny filter changed. They brought me a couple of pieces of a snap ring from the pan. It was a wavy ring and i took it to a tranny shop and they said it was probably from the overdrive unit. I thought about having it rebuilt then but i figured i would wait until it went out. That was about 25,000 miles ago.....I know its not the smartest thing to do, but im on a budget so its saving me a little money for now.
