did you say that in last year's thread that the dealerships were denying the problem with the trannys? My wife works on the turnpike and she talked to a customer from South Dakota. He apparently had taken his truck, a 2003 3500, into a dealership for routine service. The mechanic who was road testing it came back to the shop and parked the truck outside the shop with the engine running. When he came back out, about five minutes or less later, the truck had rolled across the lot, hit a utility pole. The gentleman said that the mechanic came in and said "it did it again!"

So is the thread archived where I can look at it??

Thanks
When the problem was new, there were lots of denials from dealerships with the words, "never heard that complaint before". But after the NHTSA sent letters to DC, (DC had to copy the dealerships as well) dealers began looking for it.
Here are four threads I know about. I'm sure there are more.

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=50234
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=39925
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...&postid=479699

There's also a post of an owner starting his truck and often it would lurch backward like a manual but it wasn't... but I couldn't find it.

Did your wife search her dealership for letters from the NHTSA? When the NHTSA adds a problem to their watch list, aren't dealers legally bound to report them? The NHTSA document would have had the terms "FALSE PARK CONDITION" I imagine since NHTSA incidents do on their web site.

Natstayl,

The incident that my wife told me involved a customer at her job. He told her what happened. Of course the customer that told her was tickled to death that the truck that he took to the dealership was replaced with a brand new one apparently at no cost and with a truck that had a manual tranny. When his truck rolled at the dealership it rolled into a pole and snapped it off and it landed on the truck.

OUCH! I thought you meant your wife worked a dealership. Sorry
At least that's one customer who had an "unusal" dealership service experience.

My 2004.5 Ram 3500 diesel has done it twice. The second time I was injured with a dislocated shoulder from running after it.
Someone's going to get killed.

If you go to the national highway safety website it will direct you to the department of transportation website and it shows where an investigation has been launched by the government. The web site is www.nhtsa.gov or .org, I can't remeber off the top of my head. I do know that they are gathering as many complaints as they can especially those that have resulted in injuries. I had considered a product liability suit aganst chrysler but every attorney I talked to said no since I was not injured.

I just had the valve body replaced on my truck and eversince then the shifter has been doing odd things, like the indicator not showing the gear im in and couple of times I could not start the truck because it was in reverse when I shut it down when the shifter was all the way to the left in the park position

When I put mine in Park I have to 'wiggle' the shifter to make the Park light come on.

My truck is only a few months old now and dc must have done something about it at assembly now... My truck has problems getting OUT of park there has been many times I have had to try 5 or more times to get it out of park!!! On level ground. Also I have a problem on the other end of the shift patern I have a hard time getting it into 1st gear and showing on the indicator. Sometimes it does it sometimes not. I have never given much thought to it untill I saw this thread.. I hope this info helps!!

underwoodtransp,

That is the same thing the 2003 3500 was doing along with going into reverse on its own while parked. You would literally have to stand on the brake with both feet and then it MIGHT come out of park. another symptom of the problem was that I could pull into a stall and put the transmission in park and then after a few seconds put it in reverse without using the brake. But then again Dodge said it was operator error and not mechanical!! That is why I now own a GMC. At least General Motors does voluntary recalls and not have to be FORCED like Daimler-Chrysler!

My truck has done the same thing. One time it occured when my wife and I were on a trip. I pulled into a service station to get directions and left the engine running with the gear selector set to park and my wife setting in her seat. To my surprise, when I came out of the station my truck was not setting where I left it. I looked around and saw my truck about fifty feet from where I parked it. My wife said after the truck had been parked for about two minutes, it started backing up. She scrambled over things we had in the seat, hit her leg on the ash tray which I use for my cell phone (cut her leg) and was able to get her foot on the brake. The truck stopped just a couple of feet short of backing into an auto car wash building. When I went to the dealer to get it fixed they said they had never heard of a problem with the parking gear and that everything seemed to be ok. Another time I got out of the truck to go to the mailbox and it started backing up. I jumped back into the truck and got it stopped. So far the only damage has been to my wife's leg. I'm really surprised that DCM has not issued a recall for this problem. If someone were to be killed or seriously hurt there would be a whopper of a law suit.

my 2004.5 just did it may 16th. Stopped at c-store. Walked to front door looked back to see it rolling backwards. A 4 day old jeep stoped it. 3300. total damage to my truck. And 1800 to the jeep. I know I had it in park. Bcuz if its in gear and I let off the brake the truck will start moving with the diesel motor. There is no way I could of opened the door without it moving let alone get out and close the door without some kind of movement. I was also parked on a slope. I hope DC comes up with somthing. I havent talked to dealer. Thought I screwed up. Till I read all the troubles on this site.

This is more serious and widespread than I would have thought..mine also slipped into reverse while running, good thing I caught it early and was able to get in and hit the brakes. I assumed that i had simply screwed up and not properly put it in park. It hasn't happened since..and now I use the parking brake when leaving it running

I haven't had the Park to Reverse problem (thankfully), but on a couple of occasions, I put it into Drive and was in Neutral or caught between gears. I had to fiddle with the shifter to get it to go. Sounds like the same problem in a different area of the shifter linkage.

This is going to be something DC will have to address.
