I'm sure a flush is the best way to go if it's done right. But if the dealer doesn't even know how many filters the tranny has, why would I trust them to do the flush correctly? I'll stick to droppping the pan and doing it myself.

I'm sure the techs know what to do.Other places have the exchage machines also.Take your fliud with you. Also using a "Flush" machine gets the fliud in the trans cooler and lines also.Allison's and maybe Ford torqye shifts have a internal and external spin on filter but not the D.C. 48re.

I'm not going to have my Dodge dealer do it. They were $110 more expensive, plus I don't trust them. I'll take it to a local shop with a good rep.

The service writer at the local Dodge dealer told me the same thing when I asked for a qutoe: That there was two, a spin-on external one and the one in the pan. We argued about it for a minute and then I said "never mind, I'll just do it myself, at least I know how many filters to buy" and walked away.

Don't know about yours but trans doesn't have an external filter and the dealers wonder why we don't let them touch our trucks

Just curious if anybody knows.....Does the transmission on the Hemi trucks have 2 tranny filters? I am just thinking that the dealer people might have been confusing the two. Not defending them. But that would be a likely reason for the confusion......since they talk to different people all day every day and may have confused your truck with another one.

I agree with you though....I do it myself.

Well if my local NAPA dealer is to be believed then no it only has one filter, but then they told me my 48RE trans must be a special one as their book only showed a RE 545 and 45 trans for the 2006 Dodge trucks and they only take one filter. So your guess is as good as mine.

Well, just got my ATS tranny pan. WOW...this thing is heavy duty. Looks real nice. Im going to get a "fluid exchange" Tuesday. I talked to the mechanic and he said the old "flush" machines used a pump to push the fluid through the tranny, and if you have the lines hooked up backward you will push junk into your valvebody. The new version uses the tranny as a pump so there is no way for anything to get into the VB. Sounds good to me.Attachment 10096

The 5 speed Hemi tranny 545rfe has 2 filters in the tranny pan. One spin on can filter for the cooler lines and one sump filter. The 48re only has the sump filter. Had both vehicles and changed them both. I also recommend the fluid exchange (tranny flush machine). Get's all of the fluid out.

Transmission Flush

Just my opinion, but my last 2 transmission failures occured immediately following a flush. Debris was broken free & clogged valve body. The last was on a 97 Z71 with 66k miles while towing a trailer out of state. Had to drop 4 grand for new tranny at dealer. I would only flush one for the first time if it had less than 20k, then do it every 20k. As for me, filter changes as prescribed in owners manual under severe maintenance schedule is what I do.

With a FLUSH that might could happen I guess.I've handle fliud EXCHANGES on work trucks and mail vehicles as well as personal vehicles with much higher mileage and fluid as black as coal oil with no nothing but a better shifting transmission on G.M. and D.C. products.Wonder how even with a FLUSH that depris got past the filter as you described? 6 plus years of using a BG trans exchange machines never encounter a failure like that.

I just got back from having my tranny flushed and I have to say it definately shifts smoother. Now for the bad news. When we pulled the pan to change the filter and the pan itself we found 2 pieces of metal. Both are about 1/8 inch wide and curved. One is about 1.5in long and the other maybe 2.5. The mech. told me it probably was part of the sun gear retainer clip. He took it for a ride and didnt feel anything out of the ordinary and told me not to worry about it as it should last quite a while even without it. I dont really have a whole lot of time to deal with the issue since Im taking this truck from central Wis. to Louisville and back in a next week. Any thoughts?? I planned on getting a better trans sooner or later(probably sooner than later now). The price from ATS for a stage 3 was about $5,000. What other brands should I be looking at?
