Tranny flush or drain?
Tranny flush or drain?
I need to get the fluid replaced in my 47RE because its not looking(or smelling) so good. I see alot of people are opposed to flushes saying it can push junk into the valve body. I would like to get ALL the old fluid out though. Does the 47RE have a drain on the torque converter i can pull? Thanks
No drain plug from the factory either on the converter or the pan.
If you drop the pan you get a chance to change the filter.
If you flush it the old filter stays in place. Would you even consider NOT changing the oil filter on the Cummins?

You can do both but if filter dosen't have many miles on it(less then 30k) use the fliud exchange machine.Only way to get all fliud out and new in.Best thing to ever happen to a automatic since its invention. Most trans machines are a fliud exchange and the trans itself pumps out old and the bladder in the machine puts in new fliud. Its not a FLUSH per se.Do a web searches on such..The info is out there

Here's a really good DIY fluid exchange link for the CTD:

(will be the same on your truck)
A fliud EXCHANGE machine pushes NOTHING into the valve body. The TRANS ITSELF is doing the pumping.Plus theres a filter in before the valve body.NO the 47re does NOT have a drain in the pan or torque convertor.

Yes.There is a POWER FLUSH machine that I have never seen. All the shops I've been in and the ones I worked in all use the BG fliud EXCHANGE units tho it seems the word "FLUSH" is commonly used even with these units.Do a Google or Yahoo search there is some reading on machines etc.
I agree with Hounddog. If a flush (fluid exchange) was so bad, there would not be so many tranny shops that use them. It is their reputation on the line, and if was destroying trannies I think they would dump them in a hurry. There are stories of blocked valve bodies, but where is the proof ? I had a '99 Dodge gasser and overheated the trans fluid. It started slipping on occassion - had a flush done and it ran like new again.
I handled/sold literaly 1000s of flushs(LOL fliud exchages) Fleets LOVED it.Their ovehaul rate dropped like a rock once they got on the program. On mom and pop vehicles we only changed filters every 90k.On work trucks and heavy tow vehicles about every 30/45k. We did a fliud EXCHANGE every 30k on the mom and pop stuff and every 15k on work vehicles.Even helped some with hard seals and morning sickness(won't move cold until some heat caused seals to swell).Last shop I worked in(D.C.dealer) we had two machines and wore the fittings out on them about every 6 months with about 30 odd techs.Only trannys that ever came in with a issue after a fliud exchage were on their way out to start with and it was done on a gamble etc.On some models with the darn trans pans on straight up and down or at odd angles the comeback on pan leaks came to a halt. The fliud exchage just plain worked better and did a much better service for every one involved.Only way to change over to a quality synthetic fliud like Amsoil etc.Wife & I drove a Chevy with a 700R4 252k with 3 filters I think and a fliud EXCHANGE every 60k using Amsoil synthetic with no tranny issues etc.Filters could have gone LONGER.Nothing to amount to anything in the pan when I did change the filter.Pick you own time frame on filter but you'll find not much in the pans and whats on the magntic(brain dead,LOL) will stay on it.As I said FLEETS loved us after THEY saw how it dropped their failure rate on trucks with whomever thrashing them every day.The FLIUD is the LIFE BLOOD of a automatic.Adding a FEW new qts on service is old school. My neighbor with his 05 dually has done a EXCHANGE every 30k with FIRST filter at 90k and tows over 90% of the time with his truck. It now has about 120k and the 48re still works as good as new.Wasn't much of nothing in his pan or filter when it was changed. As yo can tell I can't say enough good things since the invent of a simple bladder machine that does a fliud transfusion.Real simple machine.Just ask ANY busy shop.
The only trans flush machine I saw was a force flush (the machine did it all with the car off) at a Toyota dealer years ago and this is the one I've had several rebuilders tell me to stay away from. I'm still a firm believer in installing a new filter every 30K. I mean they don't cost and arm and leg and they are only cost about $16.00. As I see it the trans filter needs to be changed just like the oil and air filter do and should be changed at Regular intervals. Another way to look at it is if the people who make the trans said it needs to be changed then who knows more about it the trans in your car/truck the manufacture or the person who built the trans fluid flush machine? It maybe that the bladder exchange machine is safe to use but I still think the filter should be changed like the manufacture tells us to do.

Look at the differant schedules in the owners manuals. One if I'm not mistaken dosen't even call for a fliud change until what? 100k I think.Lots of vehicles now don't even have a serviceable filter.I understand what your saying and do what makes you feel comfortable.I'm comfortable with 60 to 90k on trans filters.I'm not comfortable with just dropping the pan, changing the filter and and adding a few qts of fliud to top it off.
I called my local dodge dealer to get a quote on flushing the tranny and the lady in service told me it has 3 filters. Is that true?? I've never been in a tranny with three filters.
