Trailer Brake Power

Howdy All
I heard some place here or another forum that there was a flash on the 06 Rams for the brake controller. Something about being integrated and not having its own fuse. My brake controller (a prodigy) is saying its overloaded and is not working very well. Is there a flash fix for this?

Thanks
Robert

The truck's computer has no impact on the Prodigy alarm indications and the OL indicates a short (high current condition) in the blue wire from the controller to the brakes. It could be the truck wiring or the trailer wiring. It could also indicate you have a failed controller.

I've been down this road before too with my Prodigy. It's most likely your trailer's wiring. For me, after lots of grief trying to locate the short, turned out it was the wiring running through the trailer's axle tubes from the left wheels to the right wheels. The wire inside the tubes had worn down the insulation material and were shorting against the tubes.

If you can, try hooking up to another trailer and see if the problem goes away.

Grab a six pack and an old shirt. Next you need to crawl under the trailer. Start at the plug and check for bare wires. Good luck. The job sucks but you'll find it. My Prodigy had the same thing. Sometimes it would hit extra hard. Other times it wouldn't work at all. I was coming down to a light and stepped on the brakes. Not enough brakes. Got mad and pulled over and started tracing wires. Found one pinched in the tube in front of the front axle.

x2 on chafed wires in the trailer axle tube. pia

at least the prodigy throw a code instead of just shutting off or blowing a fuse.

Is there any way to isolate the area of the short?
And how tuff are these wires to check in the tube?

If you have a nice hard/steady short it's easy. Just keep opening up the connections until you find it. I was not so lucky - mine was intermittent and worse after driving 3 hours in rain...

I just pulled the wires out of the axle to inspect and then tie wrapped them back on top of the axle instead of trying to snake them again. The other place to check is inside the wheels where they connect to the magnets - sometimes the wire comes off the clips and chafes there too.
