Tradin' up to a mega cab
Tradin' up to a mega cab
Well, I have a little guy on the way and my trusty 2000 2500 is not big enough to hold him and all his stuff. I'm wanting to upgrade and might as well get a mega cab in the process. I've owned my truck since 2003 so I am familure with all the quirks of the 2nd generation dodge. I haven't heard many bad things about the 2006-2007 5.9 mega cabs. Is there anything I need to look out for?
Fuel pressure?
Tire wear?
Front end play?
A/C works?
Any specifics on where something would leak or rust?

From personal experience, Megacabs are awesome to have. I also have a little guy on the way but also have a 3 year old daughter in the backseat already. Love the extra space and the fact that she can't kick the back of my seat. As far as things to look out for it is just the same as any other truck in my option, you make sure it wasn't hotrodded extensively but what i found when i was looking for mine was that mostly wasn't the case with these. Key to life on these 3rd gen trucks is filtration. The stock canister just doesn't cut it when it comes down to bosch's specs for the injectors. Gauges are always a good idea just to know what is going on. Ball joints are a bear unless you get a 2wd (that's my next problem to fix on mine). Steering Stabilizer or the gear will eventually give out (mine did at 85k). I have D rated tires on my at the moment but my wear has been great using wheel balancers, say what you want about them being snake oil but they took care of my cupping and now that i have 21k on the tires and they look very good (sorry for the soapbox). There are a lot of common problems spelled out on here with quick searches about "blend door" "death wobble" (yep still have it on ours too) "coolant leak by turbo" "one piece driveshaft." Personally i wouldn't trade my mega for a Ferrari unless i could sell it and buy my truck back for money in my pocket.
I ran into a few in my search for this truck that had cosmetic damage but mostly limited to just behind the wheel wells from stone chips. I had mine undercoated well and stoneguarded before I hit the salt winters of northern indiana so i can't say much for rust.

We have the 06 Mega cab with 70,000 or so miles on her and the only problem we have had was the transmission. We bought used and dont know the abuse it went through before. Dodge found burnt and damaged clutch packs....yes...all services were done on time and Dodge did honer the warranty. Other than that the truck has been great .
That passenger C-Pillar is a HUGE blind spot. Also, apparently not all Megacabs come with the ducting for the A/C to the back seat passengers. I'd make sure you get one with that if you can.
Megacabs ARE awesome though and I wish I still had mine...

I have a 2006 Mega cab....upgraded from a 2005 club cab. Trans issue at 29K miles ...thats about it. I got 95K miles on her now and no other issues. You will love the extra room. I hate the 2 piece drive shaft. I will be upgrading to the 2008 one piece unit soon.
