Tractor Fluid in place of ATF??

Curious if anyone has tryed running something like the John Deer HyGard hydraulic fluid in place of regular ATF?

I've seen it used in drag cars and everyone raves about it, supposedly makes the car shift much firmer, clutches hold stronger, and it's very very heat tolerant.

Makes sense to me, it's purpose built for 3000psi hydraulic lines, heck some tractors run a transaxle of sorts, so it's doing diff gear duty on heavy equipment as well.

I'm gonna grab 5gal of it (just under $50) and see how it works.

note: One race trans required running a screen type filter as the cloth type element was restricting the flow.

I just had my VB reworked by a local guy that has been building drag, tow and whatever type of transmissions since the 60's and he told me when he builds it from the ground up it gets the 30w hyd. fluid not ATF.

I work for a new holland dealership, and JD hyguard is the same as our Multi G134 it is basically a 10w 30 + a few extras. But both are very heat tolerent.

My road warrior car is a Taurus....on that forum there are a few running hygard/hytran with success - I'm considering it as I'm due for a trans oil change and the info I've found online sounds like it would be beneficial.

The term "sounds like" does not instill a whole heaping passle of confidence. If you have the tranny and time to spare, knock yourself out! I don't want to hose down your BBQ, but some of the things I'd be concerned with are:

Lubricity
Friction coefficient
Viscosity at temp extremes
Clutch pack, hose, and seal compatability
Reaction of the VB to the different viscosity
Detergent effect
Filter compatability
TC reaction
TC lock-up

I tried running it in a 92 ford trans. It didn`t work. I ended up replacing the trans.

When it comes to transmissions, use the spec'd fluid plain and simple. Unless you can guaranty the substitued fluid meets the criteria outlined in Sur5er's post, I would not bother. Unless of course you are gambling man and willing to bet a transmission on your fluid choice.

I continue to run mopar atf+4 since my truck was new. You would be gambling on using a trans fluid that is not made for your trans. Spend the extra coin on the right stuff. It is much easier than changing a trans.
